Theater

Theater

A Poem by J. C. Koch

For a second your there
In your theater seat
Dying for the show to start
Chewing on something sweet

Then the lights go down
And the curtains draw
The show is beginning
Prepare to be in awe

The actors on the stage
Move and dance and sing
Lights flash and music rises
Till your eyes blur and ears ring

And then you are lost
In the story unfolding onstage
Real life is left behind
Like a story on a different page

Till the final standing ovation
Their world is your own
And then you are back again
to the world you've always known
