Hello Death

Hello Death

A Poem by J. C. Koch
"

Another poem about death, its a bit of an obsession

"

Hello Death, good friend,

Just letting you know, I am not afraid.

I know you’re always there, omnipresent

Right behind my back, in the ticking clocks

The perverse comfort that I derive from you,

Comes from the fact that you are not the end,

For I know I’ll still be alive, even after

I enter your embrace.

Hello Death, good friend

I see how all the others run in fear and panic

I see them attempt to hide from your eyes

I see them try to fight you off, tooth and nail

But I won’t, I will keep calm and keep living

Till that inevitable when you show your face

When I welcome you as an old friend

At the very end.

Hello Death, good friend,

Just letting you know, I am not afraid.

I’m different than all your other friends,

For your final date with me won’t be the end.

My body and mind may go calmly with you,

But my soul will live on and on and on and on,

For these words that I type now, this moment

Will NEVER die.

That is so powerful. That is a very amazing poem I will gladly agree to. The last stanza was very impelling and very true. I enjoy how you wrote this and your style of introducing Death, making Death a character and then calmly welcoming him. It makes sense throughout this piece.

I like this poem a lot. You are correct. If we are lucky our words will be remembered. I believe when we read a Poet or Writer from the past. Bring them back alive for a moment. Death is always near. That is why we need to keep moving. A excellent poem.
