Cover Your Mouth When You Speak

Cover Your Mouth When You Speak

Cover your mouth when you speak

Ignorance is contagious

It cripples and blinds the uneducated
Those who have not been vaccinated
By the volumes of science read, not dictated

Cover your mouth when you speak

Your podium, an amplifying tool
That calls the sheep into Sunday school
And helps politicians to play the fools

Cover your mouth when you speak

Lest you seek to ruin or flaw
Those chronicled and precious natural laws
By waggling that hideous worm inside your jaw

Cover your mouth when you speak

This poem probably has the best auditory effect I've seen for a long time. Reading it aloud, I naturally go for a rather bold, declamatory voice during the three-line stanzas, but go soft during the one-lines - an effect which works to the poem's advantage and is not something I artificially forced. The poem itself is very focussed and sharp as sword, helped by the very strong and consistent rhyming scheme. Knowledge is power, but false knowledge is false power; one must be sure to extoll the first, and condemn the second. A good read and a good poem, most definately! =)

Haha! I have a long list of public and religious figures I'd like to send this to. However, I can't imagine they'd understand, considering how inflated their self-importance is.

In one fail swoop, you have managed to capture all our views, giving an eloquent voice to our thoughts. Just magnificent.

succinct and aphoristic. i agree 98% of the population are sheep. this is an astute commentary on society today. just like the saying goes: who speak knows not, who knows speak not. great job.

I really enjoyed this. (: The rhyme was flawless and never sounded awkward. This would definitely be fun to recite to a few people, who think they know everything. :P Great job! ^_^
