What I'd Say

What I'd Say

A Poem by J A Lauder
"

This is how my brain works. It's rather unpolished and probably needs tidying up, but for now I'm ok with it.

"

When I wake up in the morning, or what I call morning,
And see on the news that another soldier has died,
Or more people were arrested as suspected terrorists, I’d say,

How did it come to this? What human could possibly decide it’s ok,
To force other people into your way of thinking through fear and mutilation?
How can you send your sons, daughters, brothers, sisters to their deaths?
How did you pluck up the courage to go out there and fight?

When I walk passed a shop, or just down town,
And hear a young girl talk about diets,
Or a stranger sniggering behind another stranger’s back, I’d say,

What the heck’s driving you to this so young?
Are you really feeling so pressured that you’d risk your own health,
To grow up in the shadow of another person’s expectations?
How can you possibly judge a person without ever having met them?

When I’m traipsing home after dark, ears still ringing,
And see you curled up behind a skip,
Or fighting and crying in the middle of the street, I’d say,

Why do you let it get this bad?
Do you truly believe you can’t enjoy life without poisoning yourself,
That your friends will only care about you when you’re totally wrecked?
Or that you can only live up to people’s views by sacrificing your own?

When I see a parent forcibly dragging their child,
Or deciding it’s not appropriate for them to be idealistic,
And making them grow up before their time, I’d say,

Is this how your parents raised you?
If it is, you have my sympathies, but you’re being unfair,
A child is just that, they should play and laugh and imagine,
Before you send them into the factory of a society we have.

When I hear someone beating themselves up,
Cursing themselves for things not their fault,
And losing all their faith and confidence, I’d say,

Chin up, it’s ok. You shouldn’t get so wound up,
Times are hard enough without you torturing yourself,
Take a breather and calm down,
Even when things can’t get worse, it just means they’ll get better.

When I spot a group of friends just having a laugh,
Without being a nuisance to other people,
Just living life the best way they can, I’d say,

Good for you, you’ve got it right.
Letting other people in and letting yourself out,
You’ll go further than most,
With your feet on the ground and your eyes on the sky.

That’s what I’d say, if I dared,
That’s what I’d say, if I’d  be heard.

That’s what I’d say.
