Chapter OneA Chapter by Jelly Five Jackson~Sean~ It was a few years ago. Alice took me to the field before school. She was eleven just starting sixth grade. I just turned thirteen and my brother left for the army. The sun was shining and the heat made me sweat. We strolled until we reached the blue lake with the tire swing. "Sean?" She asked in a soft voice. "Yeah?" I crossed my arms and looked at the lake. "Do you think your brother will make it?" Alice held her small book bag and rocked herself. "I don't know. He's smart enough. So I guess yeah. I hope. W-why?" My voice was cracking in embarrassment. She sighed and looked down. Her brown hair flowed with the low wind. Soon enough the wind stopped. "I was just wondering." It became quiet. She looked at me with her big hazel eyes. "Sean?" She whispered. "Alice." She held tighter to her book bag. "Happy birthday." She whispered. I looked at her puzzled. She knew my birthday was last week. And she was there too. Slowly she took out a small box from her book bag. It was a teal colored box with a yellow ribbon tied around it. I opened the box. There was a locket, a black locket. And a silver key next to the locket. I took out the locket and the key. The ribbon flew away landing next to Alice's foot. I held the box under my arm. I opened the locket. There was a picture of us in our school uniforms at recess. I wore that same stupid blue vest. And she wore that same blue skirt and white blouse. Her eyes closed smiling. My eyes were looking at her with a slight grin. "I remember this." I said softly half to myself. Alice grinned. "Yeah. Anna took that picture. It was after that school field trip." She leaned closer getting a better view of the picture. I turned and faced her. "Thanks Alice." I said. She turned a little pink. She started to say something. She froze and thought a moment, then changed her mind. I leaned and kissed her cheek. I tried to stop but my brain stopped working. We froze. I just stared at the blue lake. She started to say something, "Sean-" I woke up sweating. The tubes in my arms started to make me vomit. I leaned on the left side and vomited in the blue bucket. A nurse walked in with her clip board. "Are you okay Sean?" She asked quickly. "I... I... The tubes." I said in breathes. She went over and checked my x-rays that were placed on the right side of my bed, placed by the doctor. When I tried to get up after I finished vomiting, my bones felt weak. I slipped and my arms flew. I hit the bucket and vomit fell out. I grunted and moaned trying to get up. The nursed came walking over with a mop and another bucket. I vomit more in the bucket. More nurses came in. My doctor came with a janitor. Three nurses left leaving my doctor and two nurses. Gasping for air my throat was left with a disgusting taste. My eyes were focused on my arm which the doctor was working on. He replaced two needles with one needle filled with blood. He stuck the needle in slowly. I was about to vomit, but I controlled myself this time. The doctor scratched his red hair and licked his bottom lip. Once the blood was fully in my body temperature went normal again. My heart was beating fast. In this case was good. "Good news Sean." The doctor started talking. "What?" I said sweating more. "You are able to go home today. But we have to finish circulating your blood properly." I smiled in relief. It would take only a few hours, but still I was able to eat mom's cooking! My room was the same as I left it five months ago. It had that same painting on the wall. And my desk filled with school books and letters. I walked over to my bed and jumped on it and sighed. The wonderful relaxation of my bed. I thought. My mom knocked on my door. I looked up she said, "Someone's here to see you." She moved aside to let them in. A girl passed by her and thanked her. "Hey Sean." She said with a smile. I studied her for a moment then smiled. "Alice." I whispered. "You remember me? Great!" She made a nervous laugh. I watched her as she motioned around my room. She was more beautiful than I remembered. I thought to myself with a smile. "How old are you Alice?" I asked. "Fifteen." She said sitting down at the end of my bed. She was wearing a red skirt with a white blouse. No more sneakers or slippers. I thought looking at her high heels. She had bright blue nail polish with matching earrings. She loves blue. I remembered. That's why she loved our old school uniform. She had pale blue high lights in her dark brown hair. It looked beautiful. I smiled. "It has been at least three years since I seen you. So I got you three birthday presents. Three Christmas presents. And a bowl of candy for all the Halloweens you missed. Oh! And I remembered to give you this." She reached into her black purse and grabbed out a phone with a yellow ribbon around it. It was a fully black phone with a keyboard. I chuckled thinking what to give her. "You don't need to give me anything." She said as if reading my thoughts. Her hazel eyes looked into my gaze. We were silent just looking at each other's eyes. I then felt a pinch in my arm. I blinked rapidly and looked at my arm. She gasped when she followed my gaze. My arm was brownish from all those needles. I rubbed my arm a bit hard which made it hurt more. Alice got up to the bathroom. I heard the water run for a few seconds. Then she came with a small towel in her palm. She knelt down next to me. Slowly she pressed the warm towel on my arm. She moved it up and down on the pain. It felt real good. Then she stopped and blew on my arm. It made me jump. She pressed her hand softly on me and said "It's okay. I won't hurt you." She blew more and the pain slowly went away. She got up and wiped her skin. "Hey my mom is having a welcome back party for you tonight. It's starting at nine. I'll come an hour before. Well see you soon." She smiled and grabbed her purse. "Kay." I got up and walked her down. Her shoes echoed when she hit the wooden floor. I saw my mom cooking in the kitchen. Sniffing the warm air, chicken I caught. Eyes closing breathing it in deeply. It opened fast when I felt Alice tough my arm. She kissed my cheek and said, "It's great to have you back." Alice walked out. I watched her leave the corner. I closed the door and sighed. It's great to be back. © 2010 Jelly Five Jackson |
