Stepping Stone

Stepping Stone

A Poem by James Probert

I tried to be the one who was going
to show you the light.
Well how the hell was I to know
that I wasn't bright?
I'd put myself through anything
to be by your side.
But everything I do for you
just proves that I'm right.

I'm just a stepping stone
For you to get back home
In search of a better life
The place where it all feels right.
Thought I was good to you
I don't know what to do
You were the world to me
My girl you were everything.

My love for you was overwhelming
but you couldn't see
That I could never be myself if you
weren't next to me.
I'll hide my heart forever so that
you'll never know
That you're my one and only
and you're my only hope.

I'm just a stepping stone
For you to get back home
In search of a better life
The place where it all feels right.
Thought I was good to you
I don't know what to do
You were the world to me
My girl you were everything.

Every day I wake up hoping
I'll be the guy.
The one who brings you everything
including the sky.
But now this darkened heart of mine
refuses to shine
The fact is I will not be yours
and you won't be mine.

I'm just a stepping stone
For you to get back home
In search of a better life
The place where it all feels right.
Thought I was good to you
I don't know what to do
You were the world to me
My girl you were everything.
