We were once Shadows

We were once Shadows

A Poem by J.A.Bentley
"

Dust and Time have all preceded our presence here and now

"

Across the canvas alighted a shadow

a narrow band little more like us

in timely span it figured and glowed

no more what it was discarded fragility and dust

in blew a 'morrow's wind

hearkened to the road's next bend

so what was once shadow grew anew

transformed by some fabled mystery inside

alighted in a shimmering cascade of raiment

to bridge tomorrow's unknown promising tide.

With each heart-breaching tumultuous wave

the once shadow's fears are edified in strength

against the very heart of soul so no more can brave

the layers of darkened water, and so hope breaks

dismal, forlorn, signify our once shadow's highest heights

while fear of a never-ending in never-ending crevices reside

With shimmering raiment lost and now darkened peace

the once shadow ferments in his old state of ceaseless vain

But the mystery has not ended, it's breathe not ceased

a breathe and the fire kindles to trickle through the veins.

A 'morrow's lesson now ensues to teach us today

a script of wisdom and a lesson best felt

a worry once removed is no tumor in the brain
