The Block

The Block

A Poem by J Todd Underhill

"

Beware the coming tide that will envelope your spirit,

Darkening the recesses of your mind as you weigh,

A fog denser than mortal man has ever experienced.

Beware.

Beware the malaise and depression of midwinter,

The marrow of your bones chilled to a glacial rigid frost,

Bringing despair from the magma of your bosom.

Beware.

Beware the desolation of being unable to scribe,

Thoughts to page imprisoned in the Broca’s area,

Echoing like a skipping record for days going on months.

Beware.

Beware the sense of doom from within your mortal psyche,

Enslaved to the pen but unable to displace your quill,

To impress even the slightest of prosaic mentation.

Beware.

Beware.

Hi J Todd Underhill,
I just adore works that have me scrambling to find definitions: Broca's area is a region in the brain that plays a key role in speech production and articulation. (I only finished 8th grade :)
Blocks are terrible when the cold has set in and you are aching mind, body and soul to write.
Great Piece To Remind Us!

It's wonderful that you found inspiration in the very lack of inspiration. If I never lose my love for life I will never lose my inspiration to describe my gratitude and amazement at simply being here. Every day is a gift whether we choose to see it that way or not. None of us are promised tomorrow so "gather ye rosebuds while ye may" as the English poet Robert Herrick wrote. It's not only good advice for "virgins" but for all of us I think.
