Driven to Sanity

Driven to Sanity

I understand now why they call if a freeway,

Windows down wind whipping through my hair.

When circumstances in life shows me no leeway,

I get out, gas up and drive without a care.

Scratch off and a pack of smokes at the first stop,

Maybe some jerky and a treat for the road.

Check my speed as I blow past a cop,

In search of peace, just trying to lighten my load.

I free my demons and vent my frustration,

Wall driving toward peace away from the city.

A small town on the plains my destination,

The flat lands can be at times can be pretty.

Local flavor at the V.F.W.,

Breakfast with farmers and the hungover,

Reaching my own spiritual breakthrough,

Looking for some sort of final closure.

Peace found a weekend at a time,

Driving away from my worries and pain.

Freeing the thoughts from within my mind,

Trying to keep this poet safe and sane.

how many times I have found peace on that dark desert highway.. something about the open road calls to the unsettled soul.. I had to stop reaching for the carburater though.. the last young man that stopped me told me that I couldn't accelerate until the speedometer reached my age any more.. he said he would have to write me a ticket the next time.. silly boy.. I had barely gotten started..

Sometimes a change of surroundings can take the edge off a situation (or situations). The open road and the charms of a small town fill the bill for the speaker here. Of course, if you get stuck in a freeway backup, your stress might jump off the charts. And watch that blowing by cops. Sometimes they're itching to write up their quotas.
