A Nightmare Sonnet

A Nightmare Sonnet

Your eyes pop open with a start and jump,

Anxiety peaks in a pool of sweat.

Was your slumber stirred by a thump or bump?

If it is real or dream, you forget.

Shadows stir in the moonlight on you wall,

As the trees now dance in an autumn breeze.

Did you finally hear the banshee’s call?

Or will the boogie man make your heart freeze?

Is there an intruder downstairs from you?

Or maybe a monster under your bed?

Pulling up the covers, dread fills you through,

Endless scenarios play in your head.

Foreboding’s slippery slope is so steep,

When all you wish is to fall back asleep.

Nicely rhymed. To the anxious, there are always opportunities for insomnia.
