Stuck (Part Eight)

Hoshi's Chapter

My Ōku no ikimono was keeping up, trailing behind me as I walked beside Kenta. He seemed to be very interested in the pirate’s captain. Quinn was it? When did they meet again? And how come Kenta never brought him up?

“Kenta.” I hissed.

“Yes, Hoshi?” He looked over at me.

“Anata ga mae ni kare o genkyū shita koto ga nai. Kaizoku to no ishi no tomodachi” I eyed him. “Karera wa dorobōdesu!”

“Calm down, Hoshi. Aye, we may seem like thieves, but we take what we need to live.” Quinn glanced at me, and chuckled at my amazement to understand me. “I can speak Japanese too, youngling.”

Mitch gave Quinn a surprised look. “Oh wow! You gotta teach me that, Captain.”

Quinn chuckled. “I will one of these days. It’s harder than it looks. Took me awhile to learn it myself.”

My eyes fell upon Melanie, the strange girl with the freaky eyes. She walked along with Mitch, hanging closely with her eyes wandering until we met eyes. She glared silently towards me, silver eyes flashing lightly before minding her own business.

The ship rocked under our feet as we left land and I gripped onto Kenta for support. My  Ōku no ikimono gripped onto me and we become one again. Sometime nudged the bottom of the Black Wasp and the ship curved sideways, some of the cargo on board moving to the other side as we tipped over a little.

“Bo! Keep your hands tight on the wheel!” Quinn yelled out to a younger man.

“Aye, aye, Captain!” Bo shouted back.

“They’re here.” Melanie whispered and gave a slow grin.

“Who, Mel?” Mitch shook her, but Melanie was soon out, and on the floor. “Melanie! Captain!”

“Leave her be, Mitch! We got company!” Quinn drew his rapier. “Draw your weapons, crew.”

A blinding movement caused the slapping of feet to echo on the boards of the Black Wasp. I called to my Ōku no ikimono and looked at the other two. They nodded without a word and we watched the perimeter, looking for the enemy.

“Kaze no pusshu.” I whispered, and the air around me began to shift as a storm settled around the ship.

“No!” Melanie knocked me back, and I hissed at her.

“What’s your problem?” I growled, and then her hands were around my neck.

“Melanie! You’re choking her!” Mitch tackled her off and I gasped to the air in sweet relief. My copies helped me up and I called for another to watch her.

“Kaze no pusshu.” I tried again and wrapped the air around me. Then burst it like a bubble.

Two dozen beings were flown off the ship and moaned as they hit the water, but then gripped onto the ship and started to climb back up. Quinn was battle four with his rapier, while Lenny and Bo were struggling with a group on their backs. Another boy was at the wheel, keeping us on course.

“Arashi no tsume.” I murmured and created a glyph in the air, blowing into it.

The winds picked up again and sliced at the clouds, creating electricity. I bowed below a strike and guided to towards a large group of beings. They groaned at my strike and one caught fire, screaming as it flung itself back into the water.

“That’s one.” I spoke to myself. “How many are there?”

Kenta surprised me, waving his arms around like a snake, and then ending in a crane formation. He cupped his hands together, blew into his palms, and then shoved them forward, and a hand of smoke shoved half of the group off.

“They just keep coming, Kenta.” I tugged on him. “I don’t know if we can take them.”

Melanie stood before me, back to Kenta and I. She straightened her shoulders, took a deep breath, and then threw her head back to scream. But instead of a scream, the side of the ship caught fire, and the creature-like beings hissed and moaned in pain, falling to the ground as dust.

“Oh wow! Mel you’re amazing!” Mitch had a small rapier in her hand and lunged at a creature beside Melanie, but Melanie’s hand shot out and grabbed its neck.

A crack sound echoed from her fist as it closed down around it and it fell limply in her hand. The corpse caught fire, then glittered into the air as dust.

Melanie turned sideways, and looked at me. “You control wind, right?’ She growled.

I nodded.

“Give me your hand.” She grabbed for it, and traced a glyph into it, her finger burning it into my palm. “Focus on it as you do your kido.”

I stood beside her and she widened her eyes. Her pupils widened, almost consuming her silver eyes, leaving just a sliver. I focused on my palm and called for Arashi no tsume again. Lightning drummed through me and rocketed through my palm straight at Mitch.

She yelped and glared at me over her shoulder. “Watch it, Hoshi! I’m on your side!”

I cursed under my breath and then felt Melanie place her palm over mine.

“Try it again.” She spoke a little softer.

We closed our eyes together and concentrated. When I opened mine again, wind and fire poured out of the glyph. Power coursed through me and I looked over at Melanie. Her eyes were a golden autumn. A small glint of silver remained behind in as she focused on the attackers.

I could feel her heart beat through our touch and tried to match mine with it. But somehow she seemed to keep hers on a different track and beat.

“Hi no naka ni tsuihō.” She whispered, and a pillar of fire poured down from the clouds.

Mitch threw her head back. “Ah c’mon! That was mine!”
