Adventure Five: Surprise Cake

Adventure Five: Surprise Cake

A Chapter by ~M&A~

Shh, ok, so don’t tell Jc but I’m making her a birthday cake. And yeah, she’s asleep. I think this is the only time to do this, so don’t wake her up alright? Geesh. By the way, it’s Sammy. If she knew I was here, she’d kill me for sure, especially since I caught her and Chloe still asleep past noon.

And yeah, Chloe slept over, I can tell.

Anyway…back to Jc’s cake. And as you can tell, I’m not the best cake makerer ever. I’m not sure how to even work a stove, but hey, we all gotta start somewhere, right? I just pray the cake is alright enough to eat. That and it won’t kill Chloe, Jc, or I.

I grab the cake mix from my bag as I creep into the kitchen, and shake the box. On the back is some set of instructions. Gee, that makes it a lot easier. All I have to read and go step by step…now what does step one say?

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350˚

Preheat? How do you preheat an oven? How come it doesn’t explain that on the box? HELLOO does anyone here know how to preheat an oven to three fifty circle? Oh, wait, I have to be quiet, duh.

I lean over the stove top and press buttons. The thing beeps as I do, and I quickly pull my hands away to stop the sounds. There is a creak of a bed, but then all is silent again and I turn back to the cake mix.

Step 2: Mix eggs, oil, and vanilla into a large bowl

Alrighty then…how many eggs? Where does it say how many eggs? I glance at the top and read: two eggs, ¼ cup of oil and a teaspoon of vanilla.

Oh. He-he. Found it.

I drop the eggs into the bowl-shell and all, because hey, they don’t say crack the eggs, duh- pour the oil in and add a teaspoon of vanilla. Huh. What’s the point of the vanilla anyway? Oh well, I guess it’s to make it smell nice.

Step 3: Stir in cake mix, 2 1/2 cups flour, baking soda, and salt.

Ooookay. Seems simple enough. But wait…what kinda flower? Like a rose flower or a lily flower? And baking soda? I didn’t know that there was such thing as a soda that you could bake! I wonder what flavor it is. Maybe cherry kind. Mmmm. I guess I can look in the shelves for some…

I search through Jc’s pantry and manage to find the baking soda and flower. I dip my finger in each to try and gag at the taste.

Bleh! They taste like chalk, both of them. How could anyone come to think of sticking them into a cake? What are they trying to kill the person eating it? Hmm, perhaps this is a cake made to kill someone…Curse you boxed cakes…I will get to the bottom of you yet…but for now a cake for Jc.

I pour in a half cup of sugar just to be safe. Hopefully it will give it enough flavor to satisfy Jc and also not kill her from the baking soda and flower. I have never truly met a flower so gross and cruel in my life till now. Where do they get these white flowers to make it, and how does it turn powdery when really they just wither in your hand?

The stove dings behind me and I smile to myself, reaching for a pan under the sink. It’s large round one, and will hopefully be good enough. Walking over to the table, I grab a large wood spoon and plop it into the mix for the cake.

I give it a quick stir, making sure to pop bubbles that seem to pop up. Who wants bubbles in their cake anyway. And no, you may not raise your hand.

I pour the mix into the pan, wipe my forehead with the back of my hand-smearing some flower, and egg onto it- and shove it into the stove. Turning around to clean up, I bump into Chloe, who’s smiling from ear to ear.

“Pick the lock, Sam?” She chuckles.

“Maybe.” I smile back.

“Whatcha doin?” She eyes me, eyes still tired from waking up.

“Nothing.” I lie, backing up to cover up the stove.

She shows me the cake box and smirks. “Liar. You’re making a cake. How come you could’ve at your house?”

“Cause it’s a special cake.” I avoid answering her question completely.

“Oh really? Whose cake is it then?”

“Uh, mine?”

“Mhm, nice try, Sam. But seriously.”

I decide to change the subject. “Hey, I heard about you and Jc with Mr. Fluffy and Yuki yesterday. How was it?”

“I’d rather not repeat it, and you’re avoiding the question, Sammy.”

Darnit.

“Jc still asleep?”

She sighs. “Yes. I’m never getting the answer from you am I?”

“Nope.”

“Alright. Whatever.” She yawns. “Hope it’s not for Jc. Her birthday’s not for another month. That would be a waste of cake.”

I smack my face on the stove top.

That catches Chloe’s attention. “Really Sammy?”

“Shut up, ok?” I smile at her.

“Whatever. How about you celebrate her three sixty yesterday on her skate board, been practicing that thing for weeks.”

“Great idea, Chlos, thanks.”

-----

Jc finally comes down stairs and I greet her with a smile. She gives Chloe a curious glance and then looks back at me, yawning.

“What is it, Sammy?” She asks, blinking tiredly. “Chloe woke me up from an awesome dream.”

“Here ya go!” I hand her a piece of cake with purple frosting and the word: Congrats spelled on it.

“Uh, what’s this for?” She raises a brow.

“For landing that three sixty yesterday.” I drop the smile, confused.

“I never landed anything but a kiss on my crush.” She glances at Chloe. “Did you know about this?”

“Nu uh.” She shakes her head.

“Huh.” She shrugs and digs into the cake. “This is cake?”

“Did I fail?” I hang my head.

Jc chuckles. “I think this counts as an Epic Fail.”
