Part V: FranciscoA Chapter by KristiMae01
Reading the last sentence and realizing thet he had made mention of his wife, Lito recalled that during the very first month after their arrival from Barok, they had recieved five cavanes of rice from Ka Inse and that later, he had been told that at harvest time, he should pay back twice the number of cavanes. This was usurious but was strictly after the custom in those parts, and Lito was not the sort who would complain. Besides, he had never thought of Ka Inse as anything else than his compadre espiritual, as they call it--- a true friend.
Suddenly, he began wondering how Francisco would move about in Ka Inse's household, being unaccustomed to so many things there. The boy might even stumble over a chair and break some dishes. . . . He feared for the boy. "And I wish you would treat Francisco as you would your own son, compadre. You may beat him if he should commit some wrong, and indeed I want him to look up to you as a second father." Lito felt he had nothing more to say, and that he had written the lognest letter in all his life. For a moment, the fingers of his hand felt numb, and this was a funny thing, he thought, bec he had scarcely filled the page. He sat back again, and smiled to himslef. He had completed the lette. He had feared he would not be able to write it. But now it was done, and it seemed, the letter would read well. The next day, he must send Francisco off. © 2014 KristiMae01Author's Note
