The Renaissance of Innocence

The Renaissance of Innocence

A Poem by Isola
"

The Parthenon is symbolic of many things, including Democracy and wisdom in balanced energies.

"
The shifting sands of nations
thread my bones
The ligature of Democracy
binds my blood
Antiquity’s river
soaks my veins
ferrying stories deeply sown
gore and glory spun

I was there in the dawn
when the curtain was drawn
battle cries called
and the first spear thrown

I’m an unfinished line of the Parthenon
shoring columns eroded by Time
Harmonious the matrix that trusses
and binds
restoring symmetry ‘tween justice
and law
weakened by foibles of humankind

Starlight presses from afar
hidden in clouds of gas and dust
sweeping ‘cross passages of space
The present is the cloture
of what has passed

Our aggregated memory
by wit we disperse
in currents of transformed experience
a renaissance of innocence
panning our archival river
with collective sieves
returning the child
to the man

I see democracy being eroded away day by day. I do not like where we are at, at present. Your poem covered much ground. It was a thought provoking trip. Thank you.

This is a very thoughtful, philosophical poem tracing the course of western democracy. It begins in ancient Greece and characterizes democracy as the matrix that restores symmetry between justice and law, while acknowledging that human foibles can weaken both. The work is ever hopeful, stating that a "renaissance of innocence" will eventually provide healing. May it be so.

History is embroidered into the present, the fabric of which has changed greatly; and yet, so much remains the same. This poem is a reflection of this. Well penned.
