My friend

My friend

A Poem by Island Hippy

come and sit
a while with me
let’s speak of the things
we hold inside

we don’t have to agree
you and me
but I’ll learn something
and so will you

we’ll feel
something real
even though it’s tough
& you’ll have my respect

when did we stop
talking like this
too busy watching
the re-run

we are different
you and I
but we are the same
my friend.

What you describe here, in my humble opinion, is what is most wrong with public discourse. We don't just listen to another person who has a different way of seeing things, we react to these differing views. Your poem sounds as if written by someone who actually walks what she talks. I love the feeling of comfort that your words feel like they extend to this lost friend (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

The lack of communication can be a dangerous thing, you spoke of things unsaid with the touch of a poet

That is by my definition the best kind of friendship! When you can disagree and have passionate discussions and grow from them. Its funny how we tend to lock into a position and own it like it is the marrow of our beings only to find merit in another point of view after a good argument. Those are the best friends to have the ones that make you question. Those are the ones that care that much drop of a hat and they are open hand and ready. Such a nice inspirational set of lines you wrote in this... glad i happened upon it.

Aloha Ken, your words make me smile, many mahalo to you x
Friendship doesn't wear the same colours or raiment, someone wrote. How true is that. Tis a feeling that can be instant or take time yet arrives without warning. And of course, dear friend.. there are times when we need hands held, eyes gazing eyes. Perhaps, silence - no need to speak.. just being close. Have been times when calls were made, someone begged to come, 'Please, would you, could you.. '

Those are the times when just knowing a person and you can share, iron out differences or more likely, not even be aware of any. Its always amazed me how, just standing in a queue can cause peeps to let go of a worry or pleasure.. find that someone else is receptive and happy to be so. Human nature is magical, mystical and sometimes spiritual. Love your neighbour.. make love not war.. whatever.

' we are different - you and I - but we are the same - my friend. '

Such an inspiring post, words to consider, to remember, to hold dear. x

Very well - when friendships start getting turned into something infatuated relations, it oft. creates the ripples of disturbance, however, i have experienced, women have been pretty loyal and soft on this as they understand how it feels when it comes to heart -

so in your poetry, i find the case of infatuation, your friend got infatuation to you; got crush on you (on narrator), perhaps, as you are married so is narrator, she offered him her friendship - the loyal one, of course, not to break his heart. Pretty much interesting write it is. Nicely put. Looking forward to reading your work, Lady Island. Cheers.

Its a sad poem. It sounds like friends that separated because of differences. Ultimately, the realization that differences are beautiful and that is how we learn and grow has not been made yet and it is important. Thank you for sharing!

Aloha Ryan, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Many mahalo.
friends can be like this, we are drawn to certain people who in my case is a religion i don't approve of and yet there is an underlying acceptance of that. We have known each other since our children were little, we just somehow get along and enjoy our friendship around the differences.
How often do you see a Muslim woman openly embrace a white English woman in the street ? ... lol
