Fear of

Fear of

A Poem by Isabelle S.

I’m afraid to open up my heart

I fear if I do,

it will be taken advantage of.

Tossed out onto the streets like used garbage

So I wrapped it in barbed wire

and if you get too close,

the pain will sting.

As long as the pain isn’t my own

my fear won't be overthrown.

All the skeptics in my head

dictate my views on love

So it’s safer in this cage of bloody wires

disguised as roses

I warned you.

You got too close to the rose bush covered in thorns

and it cut you so deep

I couldn't heal you with my own wounds.
