Heartbreak

Heartbreak

A Poem by Isabella

Gunshots fill her ears
The trumpets loud and pride
Honoring this gracious soldier's life
Her tears are present as she holds the dark rose to her heart

'Why did this have to happen to me?', she thinks as they lower her one and only into the ground
All her hopes and dreams of their future together ruined due to a small bullet
They planned to have children and live in a big house with a pet dog
Now,she lives alone with nothing except sorrow and grief

Her family try to console her
Yet, nothing can help
She just sits in her bed with tissues piled around in a clutter
The same way her mind was when the soldiers appeared at her door that tragic day

'It can't be', she says to herself as they make the long pathway to her door
Her heart shattered into a million tiny shards within seconds of the dreaded knock

As she thinks back to all the memories and happy times with the man she loves so dearly, something breaks
She stands there, looking over the casket as if there was nothing there
Her one and only is gone
And there is nothing she can do to bring him back
