How Far

How Far

A Poem by Irving Glass

How far is it now

How long have I been gone

On that pale path

Following that pale song

The birds are close to me

Their claws pick up my words

And carry them aloft

To where I cannot go

My heart beats at the thought

Of those hundred wings

So delicate and nothing-like

And the way that they can sing

The dust gathers around

The wind is grey and chill

I have come to a stop

And the birds are still

I stare along my road

And wonder when I first

Chose that this would be

The highway of my dreams
