An Island

An Island

A Poem by Rebecca Isherwood

I'm so lost

A Caribbean seclusion

Surrounded by angry waters

The same waters brought me far away

The boat has sunk

My companion not found

I, left to this emptiness

The palm trees shake with fear

This tropical paradise

Has never seen a darker night

A place uninhabited

It is more alone than I

I am very hungry

There is no food here

Some fruit does grow but

I know naught of the island's poisons

This is no vacation

Not in this desolate place

I would rather be basking

In Puerto Rico's sun

Instead I listen intently

As the water claws at the island

Grasping and dragging its sand to sea

.....Please save me.
