The Call Of The Wild

The Call Of The Wild

A Poem by The Iron Horseman
"

When the beauties of the natural world speak to you...

"

The wild places are calling.

Can you hear them? They want you back.

Go paddle that raging river.

Go climb that mountain track.

The rocks, the forests,

The mountains, the streams,

All nourish the spirit,

Give life to your dreams.

A walk along the seashore,

A hike in the hills,

A canoe on the waters,

All good cures for life's ills.

The wind in the trees,

The voice of the sea,

The silence of the desert,

All speak to the free.

The road to the horizon,

The ocean without end,

The limitless, gilded distance,

The next river's bend.

The movement of the clouds,

The sway of the grass,

The rush of the river,

These things never pass.

The world is eternal,

We humans just pass through,

There is peace in the wilderness,

It can bring it to you.

Okay, but the last stanza is actually perfection.
This poem is easy to digest while containing some lovely phrasing such as "gilded distance." The Call of the Wild reminds me of the same named book; I wonder, if you've read it? I think probably, but anyway, I agree that nature is very healing. It also makes us humble as we truly are just a speck in the lifetime of the world, or even simply, of our surroundings in this current world.

Thanks, Julie. I love the wild, too, and there is plenty of it here in Canada!
Now that is a wonderful invitation to explore the great outdoors.
I thank you for entering this poem in the contest.

Thank you, Weeping Willow. You are my favourite tree! :)
...........(wOw!)...............

I have no words......my voice is in my awe!!

Great imagery, great musicality, simply outstanding!!
(Only thing I would say concerns the "its" in the last line....its presence merely renders "peace" an unnecessary repetition, which would sound better were it to be switched out for an "it". However, without "its", "peace" becomes its own entity that doesn't necessarily apply to the "peace" in the previous line, and thus is able to complement it with its sound without marring it with its meaning and reference point).

Thanks again, Declan.
I used to prospect for gold in the Northern California and I could not wait for spring to "read" the rivers and then plan my summers to stay at whatever claim I could work. I miss the mountains....

That sounds like great fun! And I love mountains, too.
Nature can heal the illness of the souls if only we take time to go out and listen to it's magic. We are too connected to technology sometimes. Love the wording and the feel of this poem.

If I can ever get there... Hah... My pleasure, friend
City folks only hear noise. Breathe in fumes.
Fight over parking spaces. Yet twenty minutes drive out of most cities, you'll find countryside.
Most don't take advantage. Shame.
