The Graveyard Shift

The Graveyard Shift

A Poem by The Iron Horseman
"

A romp in the graveyard at night.

"

Stumbling through the graveyard at night,

A bottle in my hand,

I tumble over a headstone

And hit my head hard when I land.

Staggering to my feet, I see a woman,

Champagne glass in her hand,

“Do you need some help?” she asked,

“It seems you can hardly stand.”

“No, I'm fine, really” I said,

“I'm just a little dazed.”

“That's alright then,” the lady replied,

“I'm just a little crazed!”

“Come,” she said, with a seductive smile,

“Let's have ourselves a party.”

“Now you're talking,” I answered back,

“I can party hearty.”

“I like to dance,” she hinted

With a stunning smile.

“Me too,” I said, “I'll hum some music

And we can dance a while.”

She moved in close and so did I,

As into my arms I drew her,

But it didn't quite work that way,

My arms just passed right through her!

Jumping back in fright I tripped again,

Falling back onto the ground.

“My God, you're a ghost!” I gasped.

“Yes,” she replied, “There's a lot of it going around.”

“I must have drunk more than I thought,

This just cannot be real,” I said.

“Oh yes, it can,” the woman replied,

“This is what happens to you when you're dead.”

I was oddly in love with this poem. I thought that it was one of the best poems I have ever read.
I liked the story behind your poem and I thought that the flow was spot on!
Keep up the great work!

Thank you. So you're crazy, too, huh? lol!
Wonder if it's compulsory to drink in graveyards.
And why do we talk to headstones when we're drunk.
More to the point, why do dead people jump out scaring the s**t out of you. Questions, questions. lol

Thanks again, Nigel. Sometimes my sense of humour gets the better of me in the middle of the night!
I enjoyed the s**t out of this! Your unexpected whimsy, after reading the title really struck well! As a youth, my friends and I used to party VERY hard in a cemetery, literally less than 75 yards behind my childhood home. This really brought back memories of those nights as we drunken twenty-somethings roamed amongst the resting places. So fun to read.
