Midnight words

Midnight words

A Poem by IonaFaith

Frosted breath that tastes like stale cigarettes

Rolled between numb fingers

Under diamond stars and a pastel moon

Or the false glow from the street lamp overhead

Paper snowflakes flutter in the murky orange light

Captured in the beam like the flecks of dust in sunlight

All melt away with steaming cups of coffee

Made to help see you through to the morning

Keep pushing through the sleep that fights to take you

Not time

Not tonight

You have too much to do and too many ideas

If only you could get them down in paper

Your thoughts chase each other

Round and around behind your vacant eyes

Your tongue wrestles itself to work the words

Every sense is muffled

You're encased in a dark cloak

Heavy with dreams and warmth

But you can't stand to leave your midnight words

Not bad. You use some very vivid imagery in this piece and the message you deliver with it is hard-edged and raw, which is a good combination, I think. You could do without the 'whilst' in the fifth line from the end, though - it looks unnecessarily old-fashioned compared to the rest of the piece. Well done.
