Uphill, the Grange

Uphill, the Grange

A Stage Play by Heath Muchena

what do you see in that n****r? huh, tell me!’ he demanded

‘are you really gon go there dad?’ she retorted

‘no, no, no… this is on you, it didn’t have to be like this, but here we are… all cos you’ve gone and done this… disgracing the family. I don’t understand it, I don’t like it and it has to stop!’

‘I’m not going to stop dad, sorry’

‘give me one good reason why of all the men in the world you’ve decided to go and get yourself mixed up with that kind’

‘black men are pearls in beauteous ladies’ eyes’ she said provocatively

‘and what’s that s’pose to mean?’

‘just that, I don’t know, Proteus, Shakespeare, you want a reason, that’s a reason… like I said dad, I donno… it just happened, we met, we connected, it’s too late to reset now, I love him’

‘love what? that? you kiddin’ me?’ he said angrily

‘I don’t expect you to get it, but yes, I love him, every inch of his black… hair to heel’ she replied defensively

shaking his head with sheer distress ‘well, if that’s how you really feel…’

‘that and more dad, a hell of a lot more… and it’s real!’

‘I don’t mean to upset you kid, but I can’t accept this… you know how it goes…  it’s sort-o-like family policy… you understand, right?’ he said, trying a different approach

‘who knows policy and her true aspect shall find her ways winding and indirect’ she calmly responded, sniggering

‘huh’

‘John Webster dad, you know… The White Devil’

‘no, I don’t honey, but what I do know is I’ve been in many a battle but this here, this right here is Uphill’
