Society

Society

A Poem by Dawn Jones

Society

Psychosocial dissolution

Brought on by an over socialization with the television

Each generation deteriorating into mindless automatons

Spending all of their time making love to the home-style arcade

Whatever happened to the days where families played scrabble at the kitchen table?

Instead they gorge themselves on the loveseats of their living rooms

Obsessing over the latest celebrity faux pas

Is Charlie Sheen really winning or has he simply lost his marbles?

Teenagers in their skinny jeans and graphic tees loitering the malls

Obsessed with being drunk and naked

While romanticizing suicide

And eating their emotions because they have no other way to express themselves

We’re losing what it means to be a society

Our only role models sparkly freaks stalking teenage girl’s bedrooms in the middle of the night

Nine year olds playing sociopathic vampires on the playground

When it used to be hopscotch and Pogs

How have we come to this demolition of civilization?

This destruction of the constitution of humanity

That is nurturing hate between Beliebers and Bennett’s Army

Children suckling on the teat of a wireless connection

We’ve forgotten that there is a face behind the tweeting bird on our VDTs

A soul on the other side that smiles and laughs and dies a little bit more inside

Bullying a new favorite past time

A game to make us feel bigger and better then everyone else

Is there a way back to the lighter side of the force?

Or are we too far gone to resist the monster in the mask

Allowing our children to drown as hate swallows us down

And the zombies created by our own apathies take over the world

wow all this sentiment i too have written of...you express it so well...

i am a child of the 50's and 60's----lived in NY, played hopscotch....we played cards or scrabble or Careers as a family...

now it is like you said in this...and society is diminishing itself...

i have cried about this for years...i feel like a 60's person completely out of place in this world of reality tv and text messaging.

i love this poem

thank you for writing it.
