I really like this, Mark. As you say in lead in "memories are funny things". My memory can be an imp sometimes taking delight in hiding the things I can't believe I forgot and showing me other things that I don't want to see. In this poem you show that your memory has shown you the important things. The name is not remembered or said here, but we know so much about your relationship with the person and how you felt. "the way you 'devil may cared'." says so much and like the way you phrased it. Your repetition of "I remember" worked for me as it took me through the important things that you DO remember, and leaves me with an "Oh, well...how important is the name anyway?" Nice. Sorry to go on and on.

It's amazing how we recall certain memories and chose to abandon others . It's all part of who we become as we move away from the past. Sometimes the names or the people aren't the important factor just the experience that molds our thoughts. Beautifully written .

So while I remember this girl's face, her name is simply letters forming a word.. a symbol of sound that provides an arbitrary identity.
The trick to remembering (and it really does work) is to store a picture with the face that relates to the name. There is a young bartender working near my home that I see maybe once every three months (not much the bar type.. but once in awhile) anyway, she's always impressed with me because I can remember her name. Her name is Ashley and when I see her face I see a mental image of a fireplace behind her glowing softly with ashes.
the name, the ego, the hurt, the unmerited pain, If I'd just remembered the name ? would all the other memories be the same? Today it feels good to shake off the weight of a name and only carry ,the action of the now in my day pack.
