Late Summer

Late Summer

A Poem by Mark
"

Another one winds down

"
I just got used to the fragrance of steam,
coming from the pavement after a Summer rain.

I love how the Sun is always up
before the restaurants open.

Wearing only shorts and T-shirts
my flannel shirts lie forgotten somewhere.

The girls in short shorts and tanks
laughing behind dark glasses.

I got comfortable with the excuse
to buy ice cream.

walking after dark when it's cool
but not too cold; just right.

I expect the Sun to be up
late into the evening.

And now it's August.
And pumpkins are popping up all over.

Thank God the pumpkins are popping up! This summer was a hot one! Wonderul imagery here, Mark. love that smell that comes off the pavement after a light rain. You brought that to me. I love when people do that with their writing. Angi~

Thanks Angi :) I'm hearing it's supposed to be a very cold winter this year.

Hi Mark ! As always, I've never really liked Summer. In fact those new sunglasses I bought are even less dark than the ones I've had for a few years now. *SIGH* Very frustrating.

I definitely DEFINITELY look forward to WINTER. The solstice of snow. The climate of cool. And the Fahrenheit of Frost. All those good things. And - Rose's favorite holiday is coming up. No, it's not Christmas, it's HALLOWEEN. Yes, she's that kinna girl. :)

As for pumpkins, I used to volunteer my time, along with a bunch of other people, to wash them for pumpkin drives to raise money for the church. Those were good days ...

The build up is marvelous. Excellent poem, I like your structured free verse that creates the pauses in just the right places. Again the build up to the end of that metaphor is perfect. Loved the line"excuse to buy ice cream". Superb.
