The Song of the Road Whales

The Song of the Road Whales

A Poem by Mark
"

When the wind hits semi-trailers parked, it makes a sound very much like a whale song.

"
I wake to their songs
and know the wind is back,
giving voice to the road whales,
as they sing each other the stories.

Stories of long black smooth roads
and the ones with the bumps
slowly killing their tires.

Songs of the drivers who hook them
and drive them,
then leave them.

Songs of the sun,
Songs of the rain,
They sing about the moonlight;
their way of touching one another.

The sound of their songs is soothing, and a little sad,
as though they tell each other
what they will be someday
when they are no longer able to haul on the road:

Storage for a country dweller,
or perhaps a billboard for Jesus;
as they watch the road they used to travel.

wow, i don't know how you chose this write for me, but you really connected..because i drove 18 wheelers for a number of years, and i felt every bump in the highway, i heard the whale songs, i broke, broke channel 19 for company and jammed gears all the way through this journey you have penned here. pulled my jake brake and smelled the rubber and felt the fear descending those 6% grades through the mountains, looking for that ruanaway ramp just in case. stopped for a rest and a shower at the choke and puke and listened to the lot lizards tapping on my door while trying to catch four before the next ten...wow! awesome write and thank you for reminding me of the rigors and romance of the road! well played and well penned!
