Sign My Life AwayA Story by InsanityIsMeA very short story about a girl who will do anything to save the guy she loves - Her best friend.I held tightly onto my best friends hand, I was pretty sure if he couldn't hear me but I had been talking to him all morning anyway. My best friend : Lee Eason. He had always been so cheerful, Lee was always laughing. He never failed to cheer me up when I was feeling down. He had his bad points too of course, but I didn't want to focus on those. I had mere hours before I lost him forever. I guess I already have, but at least he's still breathing at the moment. Lee had been in a car crash a little over two weeks ago. They told us he was brain dead, the only thing keeping him alive right now is that little monitor beside his bed which is helping him to breathe. Ms. Eason refused to turn the monitors off at first. She broke down crying when they told her, I was there but for some reason the tears wouldn't come. It was like I couldn't let myself believe it. She kept shaking her head "I don't want my baby to die, he shouldn't be here." She repeated this sentence over and over, the doctors tried to convince her that it would be best to shut off the machines and to just let him rest, but she just couldn't do it. I had stayed with him as much as I could but now his mum had finally realised that she needed to let go. Now I was really loosing him, I couldn't pretend it was going to be ok anymore. The sound of the door opening interrupted my thoughts, I looked up to see Lee's mum standing in the doorway. She flashed me a small smile, her eyes watering a little. I could tell she needed some time with her son before he was gone for good. "I'm going to get coffee, I'll see you later." I said to the room more than anyone in it. I wandered down the plain corridors, the floor squeaked as a nurse hurried past me. I walked slowly to the small café which was down by the entrance of the hospital, the coffee here tasted more like soil but I bought one anyway, keeping my hands warm with the hot paper cup. I was alone. I was left with only my thoughts for company. This was where things got bad, I needed a distraction or my coffee would slowly become salty with tears. But no one was there, no one was going to cheer me up this time. With that thought, my eyes began to well up. I couldn't stand crying in front of people, it made me feel weak. I wiped furiously at a lone tear as it cascaded down my cheek. Soon enough I was all but sobbing into the cold wooden table in front of me, my coffee was now cold and still un touched. It was a waste of money, but what did that matter now? Nothing mattered anymore. There was a scraping sound beside me, like a chair being dragged backwards. I didn't look up. "Need someone to talk to?" A voice asked. Still, I didn't look up, "Or a tissue?" This time I looked up, why was this guy even talking to me? I wanted to be left alone, I didn't need any new friends. The guy looked to be in his early twenties, he has dark hair. Almost black, I couldn't tell if it was dyed or not. He had dark eyes too, but really pale skin with a tiny bit of stubble on his chin. I wasn't really in the mood to be thinking about boys, but this one had definitely caught my attention. I couldn't take my eyes off him, there was something about him that was just, different. He held out a tissue and I took it gratefully, giving him a small nod in return. My fingers brushed his as I took the tissue from him and I couldn't help but notice how cold his hand was, it sent tingles shooting down my spine. Was that a good thing or not? I wasn't sure. "Are you going to tell me what's wrong?" He asked. I smiled, he seemed so nice. I felt like maybe I should talk to him, it felt rude not to after he had been so kind to me, and maybe it would help to talk to someone about it. So I told him, I told him much more than he asked for. I told him about the day I met Lee, the time we fell out because he cut all my dolls hair off. I told him about our first day of high school together and how I'd been so bummed out when I found we only had two classes together which meant I would only get to see him at break and lunch most days. Then I told him about the accident. I told him every tiny detail that I could remember, crying as I did. My heart was aching in my chest, I felt like it was going to cave in any moment and I wouldn't be able to breathe anymore. Just like Lee once they shut off that machine. "You love him don't you?" The stranger said softly. I nodded. I did love Lee, as more than just a friend too. I never got the chance to tell him. "Would you, die for him?" My eyes widened in shock. What did he mean? Was this guy mental? Oh great, I'd gone and took a tissue from a loony and now he wanted to kill me or something. "I can make this all go away. I can save your friend, all you have to do, is give me your life." He said. Tears welled up in my eyes once more, what did he mean he could save Lee? How? "You can?" I asked. I'm not sure why I asked him this question, it was absurd to think that he could really save my brain dead best friend. He nodded. "I can give him a full recovery. He won't remember you, but he will be alive, and healthy. Isn't that what you want?" He asked. "How do I know you're telling the truth?" I asked, still uncertain. He leaned in close so that his mouth was beside my ear. "I'm from down below. If you get what I mean." He whispered. I looked at him in confusion. He clicked his fingers and suddenly there was a flash of light in front of my face. Flames were licking at his hand, they faded almost as quickly as they had appeared. Now sitting between his thumb and finger, was a piece of paper. He could do this. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a black pen. "Sign this, and Lee can live. Just like he should be." He said. I stared at the piece of paper as he pushed it along the table towards me. Should I do this? It was crazy, but it was for Lee. And he wouldn't remember me afterwards, that hurt but at least he wouldn't suffer from loosing his friend. "And I'll die?" I asked. He nodded before telling me to remember it was for Lee, he promised me I would feel no pain. "Can I do something first?" I asked. Once more he nodded. I told him I would be back in ten minutes. I all but ran back to Lee's room. His mum was no longer there which was good, that meant I wouldn't have to find a way to get her to leave. I walked over to the bed, taking hold of Lee's hand. A small smile made it's way onto my lips as I pushed back his fringe and leaned in towards him. "Make good choices. Live, be happy Lee." I whispered before placing a gentle kiss to his forehead. Before leaving the room, I found a small sheet of paper and pulled out the pen that the guy had handed to me before. I wrote out just three words, they were scrawled in my neat swirly handwriting, but he wouldn't know that when he woke up. - I Love You. I took a deep breath as I opened the door, another tear making it's way down my face. "Goodbye." I whispered. Then I left, I walked down the halls with a million thoughts buzzing round my mind. None of those mattered though, because I wasn't going to be having any more thoughts once this was over. He was still sitting at the table when I got there. He gave me a smile when he saw me, but it didn't seem nice anymore. Now his smile held a hidden meaning, it was smug. He was pleased with his work. I didn't let this faze me, I had to save Lee. "Ready?" He asked. I nodded, it was now or never. I took the paper from him, scrawling out my signature. Cold air washed over my body, creeping up from my toes to the tip of my nose. I was shaking, he was right. There was no pain, but I was cold. So cold. And then the darkness took over. © 2013 InsanityIsMeFeatured Review
