Kiss Away the Ghost

Kiss Away the Ghost

A Poem by A.J.

Those nights when you find yourself awake

And pacing empty halls in the cold

chasing down her memory, longing for her touch

But you're only holding empty glass

Those nights when you're driving down the lost highway

That used to be your get-away dirt roads

Where you used to count the stars and dance around

Right up until the sun rose;

Its nights like those that can wear a man down

Can hurt him worse than broken bones

Can make him wish he hadn’t had a soul

To chain him to times of old

Can make him plead for the arms he used to call home

Even though they’ve long been bought and sold

And for lack of a better way, you pour another drink

And just try to kill off the pain one more day,

Truth is there isn’t a cure that kind of ache

Not a smile that doesn’t seem fake

Not a night you don’t curse the stars

Until you find a way of your own

To Kiss Away The Ghost

Even if for just one day or just one dream

That doesn’t make you hate the world

That doesn’t make you hate the empty bed

That you woke up in again, where the sheets are always cold-

When you try so hard to find a way to hate her for walking out- but you cant shake her smiling face,

the love and the warmth of old, the only one you’ve ever known,

Those nights are the worst kind to be spent alone
