Athlete's Poem

Athlete's Poem

A Poem by Abigail

I can remember my first game,

Walking out and hearing them announce my name.

I knew right then, that this is where I wanted to be,

The field, the lights, the fresh dirt stains.

Not many can comprehend the feeling,

Of walking out with fear, but believing,

That all the hard work and practice comes down to a single moment,

This is the time when you must step up and own it.

I never thought this feeling would last,

Even years later when my time to play has long since passed.

I don’t think it will truly ever leave me,

The games, the players, the coaches, the teams I had beat.

Then again, I guess that’s just the life of a college athlete.
