‘Tell me, boy.  Who was it that informed you of such things?’

            ‘It was Mother.’

Rafton shifted his weight to face away from his son and spat in the snow.  ‘Your mother is a b*****d of a woman.  She can hardly tell her left breast from her right’ he muttered.  ‘What makes you think she would know of such things?’  Lucian tightened his grasp on the horse’s rein.  ‘She swore it’ he said.  Rafton chuckled.

‘Yes, and nine years ago she swore that she would bear me another son worth living for.  Yet here I am, with three narrow minded daughters to feed and a son who can hardly pull his own weight.  If it were not for your brother, perhaps I would be better off with a pack of wild wolves straight from the Northern Corner.’

This was not at all the first time his father had expressed such feelings.  He was well aware as how to Rafton felt towards the rest of his offspring in comparison to his elder brother, and felt it useless to dwell on such things.  ‘I can learn father, honest I can’ he said.  ‘Send me out into the fields with Fer Herman and he can teach me to fight just as he taught Archibalt.  I can be just as good as him, maybe even better!’

Rafton turned his horse so that it faced back towards Lucian’s.  The last time he had sent his son out to train it had resulted in nothing more than an injured horse, a bloody nose, and Fer Herman, the fighting master, threatening to hand over his job to a slightly more patient instructor, along with a great many other misfortunes.  “Yes, and think about what happened the last time I allowed you to do so” he demanded.  Lucian stared at him blankly.  It had been almost two years since his father had banished him from the sport, and it was unknown to him as to why he was still forbidden to practice.

“You were lucky Fer Herman agreed to remain in his position.  We very nearly lost him as an instructor that day, all down to your own stupidity.  It is no wonder he refuses to carry forward with your training, and to be blatantly honest with you, I do not-“
