Night and Day

Night and Day

A Story by Riley

“Look up at the sky darling.” The sky was a fiery orange as the sun sank behind the horizon. Wispy looking clouds shown violet and pink. A few bright stars were visible. A crescent moon looked like a hazy figure behind me.

“Mummy, why does the sun go down every night and the moon come up?” I asked in a childish sweet voice. Mother seemed to ponder an answer. Her forehead creased and deep thought could be seen in her brown eyes.

“Well, long ago, the world was always full of light and song. Light would never go away.” She said.

“It never got dark?” My eyes were wide with amazement.

“Never. And that was because of a little wolf. The little wolf of light. But one day, another wolf came into the forest. He was the wolf of darkness. Everywhere he went, darkness would follow. And from the darkness came the mean creatures of the dark. The animals of the forests were scared and they no longer sang their songs of endless light. All was quiet.

“The wolf of light began tracking down the source of the darkness. As she roamed the trail of darkness, light took it’s hold once more. One day, they meet. The wolf of darkness tall and strong. He stood far above the little wolf of light. Dark and light stood hastily waiting face to face. But the wolf of darkness could not bring himself to over take the small bright wolf in front of him. Instead, he dropped down his head and brought his muzzle to hers.

“The wolf of light felt a spark in her heart. Millions of emotions sparked from the single touch. Beautiful shades of purple and pink and orange were set ablaze between the two. The stared into each others eyes, their gaze inseparable. That is until the animals of day came to the wolves. They drove the wolf of darkness away, out into the sky, to stay there for eternity. But the wolf of light could not bear to see him go. There was a longing in her heart. So she followed him into the sky. And there they stayed in an endless battle to see each other once more.”

“But I still don’t understand mummy.” I say.

“Well in the transition between night and day, they meet. And that is the story. And it’s exactly how it happened.” Her voice rumbled through her chest. I lay my sleepy head down on her warm fur. Her chest lulling me to sleep. She gently placed her muzzle on my head. With one last look at the sky that was now a deep shade of purple as the wolf of darkness takes over, my eyelids fall and my mind slips away to sleep.
