Him.
Nothing was different from all the other cold, wintery days, at Valiegh highschool. Mary-Anne sitting in her desk, doodling for art class, her messy bun almost falling out. Mr. Jorden, the teacher, talked about simple math equations to himself, not noticing that no one was paying attention. Keith, the teachers pet, looked up. Everyone looked up, too as if there was something there, interesting him. Mary-anne on the other hand, still doodled. Colongne filled the air, it was strong and coming from the class room door. Soon, the door opened to find a six foot four boy, with long brown hair, he was beautiful and made everything look like Valiegh wasn't just an unknown, poor town. "Can I help you?" Mr. Jorden asked, looking at him. The boy smiled, and nodded.
"I'm new, my name is Alex Rale." said Alex, the beautiful boy. The girls giggled and waved, while the guys stared as if they were in love also, but Mary-anne did not act like anyone else. She was pleased with the boy that he had the guts to move here, as she looked up she saw something no one saw. Mary looked down, she saw a change in Valiegh. Mary grabbed her stuff, and walked out. Alex watched, and smiled, he wanted to know who she was.
"Excuse me, who was that girl?" He asked. Mr. Jorden did not realize that Mary left, and he didn't care one bit. Actually, no one did care about Mary, she was just a girl with a very big brain, a beautiful face, but nothing could describe her, she was strange and had no friends.
"Mary, Mary-Anne Peek..Right class? Or was that uhm, Amy?" Mr. Jorden asked the class, forgetting everything that just went on.
"I don't know." People shouted out. Alex smiled and as the bell rung, he moved on to lunch.
Mary sat alone, no one looked at her or sat next to her. She looked around at others, and they all stared at one thing. Alex Rale. He moved from table to table, and found one table with no one in it, except one. Girls followed him around, too. Even though, Mary was not in this groupie clan, she was annoyed.
"Hey." Alex said as he sat down across from her, "Mary..Right?"
"Yes." Mary hissed, and moved away. Alex stared, his blue eyes following her footsteps, and those led out the door. A girl, Riley Thorn, took Mary's spot and stared deep in those amazing blue eyes. Alex smiled, and spun his fingers in her hair. She giggled.
After a terrible lunch, Alex and Mary both met in Science, and they happened to have to be together for the rest of the year.
"Lab partners." Mrs. Jonsun said.
"But-." Mary tried to argue.
Alex glanced at her and sighed, "Whats wrong with me?"
"Everything. I can see it in you..Your going to change everything, people, and my life. Your a flirt, you love that, don't you?" Mary asked, looking away.
"No."
"Don't lie."
"Who said I was, babe?" Alex leaned closer so that his breath was in her ear. Goose bumps showed on her arms, and he held her hand until she moved it away from him.
"Don't touch me...Please." Mary growled. She fixed her messy bun and then looked at Mrs. Jonsun who was handing out papers to work on. Alex stared and never looked away. All the girls stared, too, but were not looking at Alex, they were looking at Mary. Mary ignored, but listened.
"Oh, how could she not look at him or speak to him?" Deliah asked, just a little bit too loud.
Mary turned to her, and then smiled, weakly.
The day ended differently this time, Alex was on the bus, her bus. Mary's bus. She was the only one on that bus, and now it was Alex, too. He didn't speak with his lips, he just spoke with his eyes. Mary couldn't take it any longer, "Stop!" She shouted, the bus driver did so, "Let me out..." She mumbled, the bus driver did so, too. Alex followed. I can't even last four hours with him, how am I supposed to last?
"You can't just..Run away from me, you know." He said.
"I can do whatever I want, and if you don't think so..Then don't follow me." Mary retorted.
"I can do whatever I want, too..I can follow. You can follow and run away, whatever. Just know, I'll be right beside you." He said, and kissed her cheek. Her cheek burned, it was not like a motherly kiss, or any other kiss. She held her cheek, and she felt something warm, wrapped around cold. She looked back, nothing there. Mary assumed he went back on the bus, or walked in the other direction, but no, he was right in front of her.
"How did you..?" She trailed off.
"You looked back, I went in front..What..You think I'm a vampire or something?" Alex teased.
"No, I don't believe in them." Mary replied.
"I don't either." Alex said.
The whole walk was long, Alex understood that she wouldn't like him or love him, didn't want to breathe in his direction, but he didn't care. He loved the way she did so, he loved the way she hated him. Alex continued to tease her, play with her hair, kiss her, and hold hands, but Mary..Mary did not like it. She ran or walked in the oppistite direction until he would leave her alone, but he did not.
"I don't get you, Peek." Alex finially said, "Everyone likes me, loves me, expect you."
"Because I'm not everybody." Mary said softly and turned, and walked up her steps. She never found out where he lived, she assumed he did not live on this street, because she saw him turn into the woods which was another five minute walk to the next house.
"How was school?" Mom asked, reading the paper.
"Not so good." Mary replied, staring at the clock.
"Alex Rale?"
"Yes, he is not like..Well, us dull people. He brings color to our world, and I'm like a shield..I don't want it. He makes me uncomfortable, too." Mary said.
"I saw him..On my way to work. What a fine young man," Mom said, not paying attention to the negatives, "Anyways, you never know. You can see a big change..And it could be a good change, too."
Mary ate dinner, pizza and a sprite. She went to her room after taking a shower and finishing all the homework her teachers gave her. She sighed as she climbed into bed, thinking about Alex. She didn't like him, there was something about him that made her mad, something that made her hate him. Was it the fact that she didn't like the way he came towards her and bothered her? No. Was it the fact that he flirted with everyone? No. Mary couldn't catch it, but whatever the reason it was, it wasn't right.
The next day, was totally different. Everyone was happy and ready to go to school too early. Cars were parked and people waved to Mary like she was famous. She waved back, but no words came out of her mouth. Riley pulled her a side though, wanting to grab her attention, "What is wrong with you!?" She asked, her face red with anger.
"What?" Mary asked, confused.
"Alex. Alex Rale talks to you, you say nothing..How can you not say anything? He's the most beautiful guy ever, and you..Your just..A girl that no body knows, and..He recongnizes you, and..You don't want to be?" Riley asked.
"I don't like him. He's a bad guy."
"Bad guys are perfect." Riley corrected, "You know what, Your weird. You should go back to your weird place." Riley said, and then stared trying to see the insides of her. Alex walked by and went to his locker, he smiled at Riley and waved to Mary. Mary ignored them both and walked away. She frowned, she wish she was invisible, where she wouldn't have to worry about her and everyone else. Mary closed her locker and walked to English class, where he would be.
He tapped on her shoulder, Mary turned around and looked at him and his brown hair and blue eyes, "What?"
"Did you do the homework?" Alex asked.
"Yes, why wouldn't I?"
"Can I copy?"
"No."
"Please?" Alex begged.
"No." Mary repeated.
"Mary, please."
"Fine." Mary handed him the paper of last nights homework and counted down five minutes. Alex copied in his neatest hand writing and passed it to Megan, the most popular girl ever, but the dumbest. Mary shook her head and heard a slight, "Thanks.." from the both of them. She turned the homework in, followed by Alex, and he smiled.
Lunch came around the corner, three periods later. Alex sat with Mary again and she actually talked back, "I'm not moving." She said.
"Okay." Alex said, pleased.
Mary felt the silence grow more and more, but then end ten seconds earlier.
"So, where are you from?" Alex asked. The questions kept going until the end of the say and the bus ride home where he actually sat with her and shared the Ipod, his Ipod. Mary laughed at his jokes, too, but still did not like him. Alex hoped it did, though.
"You like me." He stated.
"No."
"Why not?"
"I told you."
"You change my feelings.." He muttered.
"I'm depressing." Mary said.
"No, your like a butterfly..Pretty and colorful." Alex said, proudly.
"I am not." Mary said.
"Don't do this. You can't lie anymore..It's been two days, and I can't take you and your lying!" Alex exclaimed, stopping.
Mary kept going and said loudly, "I'm not. Only boys lie. Alex, listen..I don't like you. I will never!"
Things never changed, he kept asking about her liking him, and Mary still kept ignoring everything. At school she tried to ignore the fact that he kissed her when the teachers weren't looking, she ignored the fact that he whispered, "I like you,'' in her ear when she was turned the other way, she ignored everything, even the fact that the whole town was changing and the population was growing bigger, and prices were getting bigger because tourists came and stayed.
Mary sighed as she sat on her bed, she thought and talked to herself about Him. She didn't like him. She hated him and always did. Girls talked to her about him and how selfish she was being and how she wasn't changing with the world. Was her problem the fact that she couldn't be herself? That she had to live with the whole dull heart ? Ever since she lost her father, she couldn't love anymore, because her father was everything. No, he did not die, but he moved away to a town so rich, you'd be dead just by being there and spending money. She wished she was with him, too. Mary cried for the rest of the day and stayed home the next. Alex stopped at her house after school, and appeared looking at her in her bedroom door way. Mary looked up, "What are you doing here?"
"Your mom let me in. I brought some cookies, they say, 'I miss you.'" Alex replied, sitting right next to her.
"Oh, thanks..I guess." Mary said taking the box full of good cookies.
"Your welcome, so..Whats wrong?" He asked.
"I don't have to tell you.."
"But you should, I'm your friend..And you just don't find them lying on the floor for you.." Alex said, lifting up her chin in his hands.
"My dad, he moved to California, I mean it's not that rich, but..To me, it's a rich town, you know? And I just wish I had the money to stop by and give a big hug and tell him how much I love him.." Mary said, looking down, removing the hands from her chin.
"I'm from Michigan, but I moved from California.. Maybe, I know..I shouldn't be saying this, but maybe you should move on? He's the one who should come here, he's the rich one, remember?" Alex asked, looking into Mary-Anne's eyes. Mary looked away, and smiled just a little.
"Right, but I don't know. Everything was better with him here."
"I bet it was." Alex nodded, "I know you don't want me here, So I'm going to go, okay?"
"Thats fine.." Mary said.
"Cool, well..I hope you feel better." Alex said, and took something from his pocket. It was a card with his name on it and his cell phone number. Mary laughed, Wow, what an idiot. She thought, but even though she made fun of the idea, She held it in her arms, like it was something special.
