Last dance

Last dance

A Poem by paperdaydreams

As he strokes his hand along her jawline
he doesn't mind when he finds no soft curls
for his fingers to entwine
she smiles
a sad tear filled twitch of the lips
as he tells her she's beautiful
no sweet love song plays in her head
only the beep of the machine
that reminds her she's still alive
because inside she feels dead
she wants to love him
but the fear of hurting him when the time comes
stops her from dotting his soft lips with kisses
she sighs
as lips brush her forehead
with a painted memory
and gulping bites back tears
she wants his lips to hold hers
in a gentle embrace
as they dance together
soft shades of rose
material brushing
she longs for her last dance
his eyes search her questioningly
unspoken words flow between them
and suddenly she cant keep it in anymore
the tear rolls down her hollowed cheek
he brushes it with his finger
so softy
as if he's scared he'll wipe
away the watercolour
of memories he's clutching on to
he pulls her close
and holds her like father and daughter
her tiny fragile frame shaking
she knows the time is coming
he knows it too
her grazed fingertips can't hold on much longer
he presses his lips against hers
as the music
slows in the background
her eyelashes brush his cheek as she falls
goodnight angel, i love you
he chokes on his words
as he looks at her
lips still slightly parted in the smile
of her last dance
