The brutal stormA Story by Samee's twin sis- ShandiThis isn't really a story. I was given the idea by my sister and she gave me parts of it to just make up and she's writing it as a book but wishes I share it instead of her."Well folks, this could be the end of the coast. Hurricane Brandy is approaching in the west side of the ocean and she's coming quickly." I could remember the weather man saying on the news. I love my father, but when he reported the weather, I feared for him having to stay behind in the storm and all he could talk about was hurricane Brandy. Hurricane Brandy is and will forever be the largest storm in history. Unfortunately, it was going to hit more than one place and we were the first to feel its wrath. Evacuation was still in process last time I checked and that was yesterday. There were only a couple hundred people left and the final evactuation would be at noon. The ship would be taking us to America where it was safe, but we had to move quickly. My mother was in the living room, watching the tube, listening to my father talk and talk about how the dangers of this storm could affect our lives. "It would be safe to evacuate now. If you stay on this island, there is NO chance of survival. The wind is picking up and the water is getting restless. The ship is almost here and it will be the last trip. The smart thing to do is load that ship and not leave a sould behind." My mom flipped the switch off and looked at me with hopeful eyes. "Malie, go grab your bags and coats. Daddy will be here soon to say goodbye and then we must leave." she explained quickly. I stood up from the deck and looked into Andy's room where he was napping so peacefully. I picked him up out of the bed; putting on his jacket and shoes and then went and put mine on as well. I could hear my dad come in with two other men at the time. I rushed out of my room and jumped on him, hugging him very tightly. "Be a big girl for me, Malie. Take care of mommy and Andy for me and don't leave her side." my dad requested. I nodded and let some tears stream off my cheek. Being sixteen, I hated it when my dad told me to be a big girl, but I could understand. I was his only girl and he saw me more often than he did Andy anyways. "Alright," my mom interrupted as more hugs were given. "We should go now." She rushed into Andy's room and prepared to leave. "Must you stay, dad?" I asked, hoping he would change his mind and come with. "I'm sorry, sweetheart, but it's my job. I have to broadcast the storm. I'll be all right, now go, go." my dad pushed. I followed my mom out the door and headed for the docks to catch the ship. * * * I could feel the wind pick up. My little brother and my mother clung to eachother, hoping for a better time. The ship was loading to take the last batch of people along while we were standing in line. My brother, Andy, stepped out of line as he started to pick all the flowers that were left over. My mother's body stirred as she tried to go and get him. "Don't worry about it, mom," I assured her. "You save our spot in line to load on the ship. I"ll go get him." I looked around and slipped out of line. I could sense the worry planted in my mother's eyes but I went anyways. A strong gust of wind splashed through my hair. I turned and looked at my mother. The line began to move again. I grabbed my little brother by the arm and started to run to my mother. I suddenly felt relieved that we were boarding now. I let out a sigh of excitement until I felt a hand of wrath pull me back. "No cutting in line. You will wait your turn in line like all the rest of us." an old man exclaimed. It was Mr. Thompson. He was a very unhappy man and only thought of himself. "But Mr. Thompson, our mom is up there." I rebutted. "end of the line, you two." he demanded. I just shrugged and did as he told. We were going to get on in one spot or another, so I walked all the way to the end. The line moved slow. If we didn't go any faster, the hurricane would wipe us all out. We grew closer and closer to the ship. Our mother watched us from the side and I saw all hope in her eyes disappear when we heard the captain yell, "There is no more room! Close the gate! We take off in thirty seconds!" An uproar blew through the little crod left. Many people began jumping over the fence. I could hear a small buzzing scream, yelling at us in horror as the ship began to start towards the ocean. My eyes searched for a solution out but I could find none. I was stuck on this island while a huge storm was brewing our way. My brother bega nto cry frantically, screaming out for mom. I tried to shush him, telling him it would all be okay. The ship's large appearance was getting smaller and smaller in the horizon. I could no longer hear my mom. We, along with a small few, were left on this island as the storm was approaching at a rapid pace opposite of where the ship departed. "We're doomed," Mrs. Teller cried. Her daughter, Rachael Teller, also known as my best friend, departed from this island days ago for her own safety. she noticed me and my brother standing there. "Oh, come no children. Let's find a place for safety. How about my cellar?" "Are you crazy?" Mr. Thompson screamed. "If we go below ground, death is upon us and we will drown from all the water!" "Well if you have any better suggestions, I approve of you telling us." Mrs. Teller demanded. I stood in thought for a moment, Andy clinging to my arms. Mrs. Teller and Mr. Thompson were fiercely going at it. Instead of sticking around to hear the rest, I made my way back to my house where I felt more secure. I opened and shut the door behind me. I could hear the whind blowing fiercely behind the walls. With hesitation, I put Andy down and went to the kitchen to make a snack for the both of us. We had skipped breakfast, too much in a rush to get out of this place. "Mawee!" Andy screamed in the living room. I finished the penut butter and jelly and pured a glass of orange juice into a sippy cup and brought it to him. "There you go, buddy," I rubbed the top of his head and rustled his dark brown, thin hair. "How about some cartoons while we wait for the storm?" I flicked on the television and laid down on the couch. Andy crawled over and put his body by my side and watched T.V. For a moment it was silent. I closed my eyes and felt myself drift away.
Crack... Boom!... Rumble!! My eyes shot open to the loud, thunderous noise. The television was on and Andy was no wher ein sight. I called out for him but could not spot him. I called out again. A pain of relief shot through my heart when I heard him laugh. I followed the giggles and found him in the kitchen. The sky was growing darker, so I turned on the light and saw him sitting on the floor, the refridgerator door wide open, and chocolate, left-overs, and milk were all over. Andy was in the Penut butter and jelly and most of it was all over him. I heard the thunderous roar again. Rain began to fall as I walked over to the television and turned it to our local weather station. My dad was already on, standing in the rain, and discussing the weather to viewers who were stuck on the island or refused to leave. "The storm's pace is profusely picking up. the wind is now at fourty miles an hour and rain is really pouring down. I-" he paused and put his hand to his ear. HIs face and eyes disappeared into his arm as he wiped the rain away. "Its...it's just in..." he spoke calmly and lowly in a new state of melancholy. "Another larger storm is appracohing from America in the east. A ship was found in the Atlantic ocean, half way sunk and ready to go under.... Can we... can we cut?" The television blurred as my dad's face disappeared. I could feel my heart beginning to beat harder. I mumbled out enough words to realize that that was where my mom was heading. I knew she was dead along with the others. Suddenly, the house went dark. I could feel small shaking and rattling. I hustled over to the kitchen and grabbed Andy off the floor. I stood there for a moment. There was a peculiar creaking noise that was coming from the refridgerator. It started to rock back and forth. I could see it pick off the ground as if it were being rocked by the sea. After one crack of thunder, I looked up at the chandalier. This time, the whole house was shaking. The noise that was springing sounded as if the earth were breaking in half. A huge boom shuddered through out and then it fell silent again. The fear in Andy's eyes disappeared along with the shaking and everything seemed normal again. "That's better, eh, not so noisy." Before my sentence could be put to work, the refridgerator came crashing down onto the counter, the chandalier following closely after it. Then, the cupboards flung open and our dished went tumbling out. Andy began to scream and cry, the sound echoing through my ear. Then, I watched as the cupboards fell out of their screws and crashed out over the floor. Pictures and cases were falling off their shelves. I watched as my family crumbled in one frame. I couldn't move. I was too stunned on what was happening. There were other items breaking and completely shattering in the other rooms. "Let's go Andy. Maybe if we hide in the closet." I suggested. I cautiously walked out of the kitchen and found a closet that was completely emptied out. I set Andy down and I was about to follow him in, but I heard a wimpering wine from the other room. I followed it and opened my bedroom door. I looked around, making sure not to get hit by the things falling down. I got down on my knees, the wimpering growing louder and louder. My eyes peered under my bed and I spotted my golden retriever hiding from the storm. "Come here, Maya," I called. she looked up at me, her black nose sniffing the air. She cralwed out and jumped on me, happy that we didn't leave her alone. I grabbed her collar and quickly put her into the closet. Something hit our house hard, forcing me to relieve my grip on the dog, causing me to go flying. Maya barked. I picked myself up and wiped the spectacles of glass off of my hands and clothing. The dog grabbed onto the rims of my jacket and led me to the closet. I shut the door and covered Andy's ears. "It will be okay, baby," I assured the little boy. Four was a hard age to be at in a storm like this. Maya began to wimper again, her gold fur shedding on us. She started to circle around and then she laid her body down. I stroked her fur for the comfort and shut my eyes while I listened to the house I've lived in my whole life fall apart from mysterious objects. The glass shattered and then in the blink of an eye, there was nothing but silence. I sat in the closet for a couple of moments, waiting for an alarm to come out but there was none. I opened the door, our house shattered. The electricity was on again, the televison playing half-way tipped over. If it weren't for the plugs, it would be shattered into pieces. "-all the electricity should be back on. Pedestrians left over, you should have left the island," said the new weather man. Where was my dad. I grabbed a hold of Andy and Maya and took them outside. Trees were blown over and sticking and and out of the water. I couldn't believe the sight of the island. I stepped slowly down the steps and let my feet hit the sand. Then I turned around and stared at my house. A billboard was sticking from the roof, trees hanging down. "Mawee, what happened to da house?" And asked me. I pulled him up farther into my arms and hugged him. "I guess we missed the storm, eh." I suggested. I turned around and went back inside. I moved some of the glass and put down a blanket on the floor. I ran to the back room and grabbed a couple of blankets and pillows and set Andy down and then laid right next to him. Maya cuddled right next to us but wouldn't stop wimpering. Andy was out quicker than Maya and me put together. I was sacared. Why wasn't my dad the weather man when the television went on? was the ship sinking in the Atlantic the one tha tbelonged to my mother? Were Andy and me going to die? These were my thoughts before my eyes closed and I fell asleep for the night. * * * Maya's constant growling and barking made my eyes shoot open. I looked around, feeling a sudden chil. Andy was huddled into the blankets but I could see his breath everytime he exhaled. I shook him. He gazed up at me, his eyes glazed over. he was shivering in mid-summer. I picked him up and brought him to his room, searching for some heavy clothes around the floor. Extra socks, long-sleeved shirts, snow boots, and a winter jacket were put around his body. Andy looked all bundled up after that. I smiled and aplied the same amount of my clothing to my body. "Come on, buddy, maybe we can make it to dad's news station. It was made as a preventable destruction area for these types of things." I grabbed Andy's hand and put a leash on Maya so she would follow. Then, I stepped outside. The sun was shining brightly over our heads. Heat was emitted onto our skin and we immediately began to sweat. I set Andy down and tied M aya to a tree and went back inside. It was warm again. I didn't know what to think. I looked at the themometer and it was at 80. I turned it down a bit and walked outside. A sudden wind chill picked up and knocked me down unexpectedly. Rolling around, I was clearly in pain. I had landed on a bunch of debris and it was hard. My face turned red in pain while Andy tugged on my arm. "Look, Mawee," he pointd out. "Snow!" My eyes whot up to the sky and saw that there really as snow and it was pouring down hard. "It was just-" I pointed to the sun that disappeared behind the storm clouds. I looked at the clouds and noticed there were clouds funneling around the sky. One bold of lightning shot through the air, hitting my house, along with a bunch of other items around it. I jumped back from the burning fire. It's heat just barely skimmed my face, doing little damage to my complexion. Quickly, I grabbed Andy and Maya and took off in the other direction. Thunder struck as violently as the lightning did. Before I could catch my balance, I stumbled over a broken branch. My ankle twisted to the right as I tried to protect Andy from the fall. That was all I cared about. Maya barked loudly over the thunder. I moaned a bit, overwhelmed by the pain I was suffering. The frisky, golden retriever rushed ov ert ome, concerned with my well being. She insisted on getting me and away from the ocean. I managed to do that, but could only transport Andy and myself under a small shelter. the wind was really beginning to pick up again. "Where are the others?" I managed to get out once I saw rain beginning to pour down. Andy held onto me, whining and hiding his face in my jacket. I held onto him while rain hit us hard. I hid Andy so he wouldn't have to freeze w hile being so wet. Lighting flashed again, over and over repeatedly. Andy peeked out from my arms. "Ma-weee!" he screamed loudly. "Shh, baby it's alright," I soothed him, my ear drum already blown away. Andy pulled himself out and pointed at our home. The wood was tearing away from the foundation of it, fire flying through out. "This storm will blow us half way to hell," I pointed out, worried more about Andy and Maya than myself. Maya wimpred, almost as if she were crying. I stroked her head and hugged her, my ankle throbbing and beating swiftly with my heart. I could feel Andy's up again my arm. Either it was his or mine was beating out of my chest, but either way, I still feared for our lives. Andy began to squirm. His constant moving made me jump, causing my ankle to move more to the right. "Andy sit still!" I demanded. Mayay stood up and began to back away. I looked at her strangely until Andy tried to get off my lap. My eyes went up into the sky. There was one cloud in the eye of the hurricane and it was funneling down, not hesitating to create more clouds to funnel. I forgot all about the pain in my ankle and started to go the opposite direction of the forming tornado. Maya ran ahead of us. I limped to catch up, but I was already limited in motion, bruised and in pure agony. I called out for the dog but she turned the corner and I lost complete sight of her. I stopped to take a break and rest my foot. "Pst," I heard. I turned my head and looked around. "Malie, over here." I could recognize the voice as Mrs. Teller's. I looked over under a brick dog house build to house five large dogs and saw a couple of pedestrians in safe keeping. "Come children," Mrs. Teller urged. She crawled out of the dog house and held out her amrs for Andy and me to go to. "But my dog-" I gave our a sigh and then looked up. the wind was blowing so hard and out of no where came a large billboard. There was a surfur with milk on his upperlip. He was holding a glass of milk and it read: "Got Milk?" "Mrs. Teller, look out!" I screamed but it was too late. Mrs. Teller looked over and saw it coming towards her. The billboard was too large for her to just move. Instead, she glanced at me with horrified eyes. For the last couple of seconds, it felt like time couldn't have gone any slower. I would have done something to stop it, but Andy was in my arms and if no one was alive to save him, what I've done would have been worthless. Now, Mrs. Teller must've been the luckiest woman alive, but if it weren't for a bold of lightning and a thunderous shake, Mrs. Teller wouldn't have fallen and the billboard oul dhave struck her. I limped over ot her quickly. Her breath was picking up immensely. "Are you alright?" I questioned. "Let's get into the dog house before that happens again," she demanded and crawled over to it.
That's all there is for now. Keep tuned in in case I write some more. Thanks for reading.
