Them

Them

A Poem by Mary Sessions
"

These are definiteley not the kids at my school. this is about some people ive been noticeing.

"

Social.

Good talkers.

But though they're popular,

And though they smile,

Sometimes,it seems as though

It's an act.

And though they laugh,

Inside, another side, another self

Is trying to escape.

A self that retracted

to make room for a fake

To make the outside better.

When, really,

All anyone cares about

Is the inside.

I think everyone can relate to this. My favorite line was:
A self that retracted

to make room for a fake

because it's true. Their personality retracts to make room for the mask. And when the mask comes off, you see that what was behind is malnourished and thin. Great poem touching on a universal theme!
