All I Know

All I Know

A Poem by Ida C. Stavnes

I never presumed to have all knowledge,
I know I still have so much to learn.
I’ve come to realize that for every passing day,
This insatiable thirst never stops to burn.

I never presumed to know all of love,
Where to find it or how to hold on when it’s found.
When to appreciate that someone special,
Or when to realize that the song has lost its sound.

Neither did I ever presume to know all of friendships,
Although I like to think I’m getting better.
And without a doubt – you’re quite the inspiration,
You are a true friend with a capital letter.

So this is what I’ve learned so far,
Knowledge about life, love and friends is neverending.
And I’m very thankful for that,
For it means that life in general is pending.

That wherever the wind might blow you,
or the people that might cross your path on the way.
Are small stepping stones and footprints in the sand,
On the big journey towards what you might have learned someday.

So  when  I  look  at  you,  my  dear  friend,
I’m  thankful  that  the  wind  blew  me  your  way,
I  know  in  my  heart  you’ll  always  walk  behind  me  in  the  sand,
And  pull  me  through  both  the  blue  and  the  grey.

If  I  at  80  have  had  one  good  friend  throughout  my  life,
And  that  particular  friend  turns  out  to  be  you.
I  will  not  only  consider  myself  a  lucky  person,
I will consider my life  to  have  been  meaningful  and  true.
