Where I'm FromA Poem by EmmeThis was an english assignment. Please ignore my spelling of freind vs. friend.
I am from pencil, paper
And the words they form From the adjectives, adverbs, and verbs I am from those words, And form those words This is me I am from Georgia and their peaches Indiana and their corn Wisconsin and their cheese I am from the subs of the navy Perry Mason marathons From apartments With barking dogs Crying children Yellow siding White walls And noisy upstairs neighbors I am from Bruce Springsteen And the Beatles From Elvis and John Mellencamp I am from candles and their holders Rocking chairs Eight hour car rides Instead of plane tickets I am from Saturdays Waking up early To go to the farmers' market Spending hours on Capitol Square Coming home with fun stuff The tastes of beef jerkey and old style donuts Still on my tongue I am from Christmas traditions The candle decorations Candlelight services And caroling with my school friends Ham for Christmas dinner instead of turkey Presents under the old artificial tree I am from being an outcast Sitting alone at lunch Getting "me time" every day at recess Being taken advantage of The few freinds I had Being manipulated and turned against me I am from freindships Friends with quirks Like a girl with green hair Or a boy in a skirt Freinds who love me Either despite my quirks Or because of them All of where I'm from Has led to who I am A young woman who still enjoys The same traditions That she did as a child But who now listens to the Killers and Goo Goo Dolls Instead of Springsteen and Mellencamp Where I was became where I'm from Where I am will become part of where I'm from And where I'll be Will become where I am © 2011 Emme |
