"Why?"

"Why?"

A Poem by Emme

Why?

Drip, drip

The blood drops on the snow

Turning it pink

Like strawberry milk

One word, “why?”

I don't know how to answer

What to say to his last word

He'd hurt me

And he'd hurt others

But that's no excuse for hatred and murder

God wants us to forgive rather than seek revenge

He gasps and makes “why” no longer his last word

“I love you”

He gasps again

“You know that. So why”

He was almost gone now,

“Did you do this?”

He puts his hand on his chest

Where I had stabbed him

I couldn't answer that question

I leave the forest

And I leave his body there in the snow

Later I see the newspaper

There's his obituary

A reminder that he had a family

And a notice about the time and his funeral

At the funeral, I answer his question

“So you couldn't hurt me any worse”
