A Chapter by Khalel Rawle
"

And it all began with a simple question.

"

“Do you believe in the supernatural?”

I nestled my hands in my sweatshirt pockets, lifting my gaze from my sneakers to her searching eyes.

“You mean like ghosts and stuff? A little bit. Why?”

She pulled her own hood over her muddy brown hair, shouldering her schoolbag and stepping nimbly over a crack in the frosty curb.

“Do you. . .wanna see one?”

If I’d known the context of what she had just asked me back then - of what my answer would inevitably set into motion - I would have never said yes.

Because now I know that there are things more fearsome than ghost, and they’ve been watching us in wait for decades, using our skepticism as the ultimate camouflage.

You’ve probably seen a few actually. Walking down the sidewalk late at night while you take the city bus home. That one guy who just got on the bus and took a seat behind you. That girl who’s stop is in the middle of nowhere. You didn’t bat an eye because that rational part of you; the part that separates fact from fiction, told you it was just some girl, who happens to take long, back roads to her home that doesn’t really exist.

But if you choose to follow them, you’d be surprised what happens when they turn around and smile at you.
