"I woke up to a birdsong"

"I woke up to a birdsong"

A Poem by Ian Allison
"

Just a sonnet about a birdsong. Is it a birdsong? Is life real? Who are we?

"

I am ecstatic when I hear them sing

It’s almost like the final puzzle piece

I walk and hear their familiar ring

I sit nearby to put my mind at ease

Someone asked me why I enjoy it so

I woke up to hear a somber birdsong

I went to work and seemed happy although

I got home to see I waited too long

For what I had waited has taken flight

I go to bed depressed but still hopeful

For what I’d seen fly away in the night

Heard me and decided to stay local

I woke up to a birdsong that day

I cried tears of enlightenment and stared

Through that window, where I once was astray

As then my heart so prominently flared.

I woke up to a birdsong that day

I wouldn’t have it any other way

I enjoyed reading your poem. Right outside my bedroom window is a large bush, and there have been countless mornings I am awakened by those beautiful chirps as well. I almost wish those bird songs were for me, but even I know how fickle nature is to her lovers. Thank you for sharing your work.
