The Pretty Mermaid

The Pretty Mermaid

A Poem by Maxwell

It looked so bleak from afar

What was it? Stray or abandoned?

With a closer look, I felt cold and sour

This level of monstrosity would not be condoned

So, meddling without thinking got me a stern look

Which was supposed to mean ‘Stay back, don’t be a fool’

How could I miss that? i had no clue

Without thinking, I took a rushed dive into the pool

There I was, hero me, with the intention of saving

Diving and interrupting a game of role playing

Unknown to me, the “Bleak scene” I saw was supposed to be the hurt charming mermaid

Completely naked in the pool, I got a slight headache

Caught out rightly off-guard but still pleased with the beauty in front of me

Then it hit me, what would I do? She was the young wife of my boss, and I’m just an employee

Soon enough, the boss came running out, half naked

He looked old and frail, just as I expected

He saw me and paused. I immediately felt a slight up-the-spinal cord shiver

I have definitely lost my job now, good riddance, I thought without blinking

But he shrugged and continued, I guessed he must have been drinking

I tried to sneak out of the pool unnoticed

Drained out enthusiasm was all I noticed

The young wife called out to the boss to let me join them and to go get another bottle of wine

She then turned towards me with a wink and a captivating smile

Left alone, she winked again and gave her lower lip a subtle bite

I smiled back and knew it was going to be a lovely long night.
