She said, "Write about it and see what happens."
"Mama. The darn thing looks more frightening than when I told you about it." I kept my head leveled to hers, hoping that if I did, she'd look at me differently.
She said, "Toughen up and keep writing till its all out. I mean you spend all day writing, so just get it out."
"Ma.Ma. If I write anymore, I'm gonna lose myself…" I counted the cracks in the wall. ..4..5..6..7..8..
"Then we'll find you."
No, 1..3.....umm...
"Mom…you don't like what's happened do you?" I heard myself ask. I sounded hollow.
"No. Not at all." She sounded pissed.
"It's okay. Neither do I." I was smiling. My heart wasn't moving. I knew. She knew.
She hid in her room, saying she had to go eat. When did we put the kitchen in your room, Mom?
I never knew how ugly her bedroom door was. White, scratched bottom.
"You want me to make some coffee?" I called through the door.
I heard her shuffling things around.
She opened the door.
She handed me a mere pen, and shut the door.
"Yes."
I placed it away on my dresser with a penny beside it. The one I found from 1932. It's going to collect dust....
