Gramps asked me what the Watermen were like, as a species. I believe this to be the most difficult question I have ever been asked. What are humans like? Well, there are so many of us, we’re all different. If I were to say a particular quality, I guarantee it wouldn’t take long to find an example of my species who contradicted my analysis.
I decided on speaking as generally as possible, the qualities of the average human. I said we had a tendency to be somewhat irrationally loyal in certain circumstances, mostly a peaceful nature but animalistic instincts have taken over in the past, which can lead us to extreme violence when we need to survive.
I spoke for many hours as I attempted to define us, with Gramps fascinated by my every word, never showing any signs of boredom.
The only time he interrupted was when I made a rather poor attempt to explain that we were a spiritual race. He didn’t understand what I tried to mean. About how most of us believe in something more than we can sense and about all the many theologies of the old religions.
He really didn’t understand this. Skeylans seem to be a practical people, with no concept of religion.
