HE LEFT

HE LEFT

A Poem by Huw

The borrower asked

I refused

he asked again

I refused

He began negotiations

I refused

He tried to bribe me

I refused

Cajoling was his next move

I refused

Sincerity was brought to the battle

I refused

Promises were offered

I refused

Cursing and blasphemy ranted

I refused

Begging was attempted

I refused

and more begging

I refused

begging with menace

I refused

I suggested he buy a dictionary

he said he understood what words mean

I asked for his definition of the word No

He left.

Just heard that this guy was found dead from a massive overdose.

I enjoy a piece that is specific, yet contains a universality. The first line could be changed to a child or, based on the title, even more so, a would be lover.

The progression and repetition really works.

I always used to give this guy money. I never lent it, because I knew he'd avoid me. A few years ago he knocked on my door and asked me to lend him £30. I informed him I would give him £30, but I didn't have change. He said he'd pop down the corner shop and change one of the £20's and return straight away with a tenner. He didn't come back. I didn't care about the £30, but I did care he'd lied about the tenner.

I've been commenting on someone's drawings for a couple of months and she asked if I was a published poet. It made me laugh because I'd left school at 13 years old and never completed formal education.. more..
