The hook behind my seat.

The hook behind my seat.

A Poem by Huw

There goes another one!

I wonder what they do?

Whatever it is I'd like

to do the same, he thought,

without any hope

or serious intent.

Like a wandering Jew

his mother said of him.

Looked like a hippy

thought like a hippy

and played the part as well.

While hitch hiking

he'd often seen

nice cars, with smart, well

groomed men at the wheel.

The men had a look of affluence

and an air of being busy.

They all had a jacket

hanging on the hook

behind the drivers seat.

He couldn't imagine work without sweat

or labour without toil

so he wondered what on earth

they did, were doing

and where they were going?

Forty years later I smiled

as I saw myself, in my minds eye,

standing on the side of the road hitching.

Brought to my remembrance

were the thoughts I'd had

while standing there

when I was young.

I placed my briefcase in the car

tucked the card on which

I'd written the address of my client

behind the sun visor,

set the sat-nav

and checked my handset

then drove off.

With my jacket

on the hook behind my seat.

When we are young and full of grand dreams and schemes and a wish to change the world, we never imagine that one day we'll be putting 'that jacket on the hook behind the seat.'

Much enjoyed this.

Beccy.

I've been commenting on someone's drawings for a couple of months and she asked if I was a published poet. It made me laugh because I'd left school at 13 years old and never completed formal education.. more..
