My little brother

My little brother

A Poem by Hugh Oliver

Goodnight my little brother,
Don't worry I won't turn off the light.
Your right to worry, as Mum might have to leave tonight.
The light will keep you safe and you will see
But I will shut my eyes and take on these dreams of what will come and what will be.
You keep oh so quiet and I will too, and our hands will remain clean.
We'll worry not and forget this night,
and together, if we shut them tight
will not be seen or heard to be.

This will not be our choice, neither our ill,
But you, my little brother will be too young to understand
and later taken by pills.
I was meant to  care and watch out for you,
but for sad beaten eyes, holding back tears
stifling my cries,
I spent too much of our precious time, hiding a whole family's lies.

The rubble and ruin of our family home
All the hurt, tragedy, tears and toil
Mimics my empty heart
And all the time since, that day and this
All I can remember now, is that night,
the one without the light,
The first day that our hearts started to bleed,
The start and the beginnings of our long tailed misery.
