Lunch

Lunch

A Chapter by Hoshiko Amaya

After what happened yesterday, I can’t help but be excited ‘til night. I’m just kind of curious what his plans will be? But, at that night, I, myself, involuntarily thought of something too… in short, my plans. But, it’s too embarrassing to tell him bluntly, I need to wait.

“Jackie!” an unexpected voice called me, it was, Ben.

“Hey, what’s up?” I said in reply.

“Wh-where’s Je-” I cut him off.

“Jenny? Oh, She has some plans today, that’s why she’s not with me.”

“Oh, is that so?”

“Yeah.”

“So in Thursdays she has some plans now huh?” I heard him mumbling to himself.

Now? Did he knew it before? Never mind.

“So? Can you tell me your plans already?”

He’s even not listening! He still mumbles to himself. Ugh! It’s so irritating.

“Wh-what? Did you say something?” he lifted his head up.

“I said can you tell me your plans already.”

“Oh, umm… is Jenny free later at lunch?”

“I think? Why?”

“Well, I was thinking, maybe we’ll all get lunch together.”

“Then…?”

“You’ll pretend that you forgot something… then you’ll going to leave us behind.”

“Oh. Okay! What a Great Idea!”

“Thanks. There’s lots more in here.” He said, pointing his finger to his temples.

The bell rang.

“So, I’ll see you at lunch with Jen then.”

“Right”

We left.

“I can't wait for lunch!” I thought to myself while tapping my ballpen in my table.

“Ms. Orison!” I heard someone called me. It was, my teacher. Shoot!

“Ye-yes!” I instinctively stood up from my seat.

“Are you even listening?”

“No ma’am. Sorry.” I admitted.

She sighed.

“Read page 256 paragraph number 3”

And so, I read it of course. Sigh, I was too preoccupied with the lunch thing, I didn’t even notice me, having a class.

*ring

“Okay class; remember to read your textbooks at home.”

“Yes~!” everyone said in unison.

It’s lunch time. We’re going to do it now. I’m so excited!

“Jackie~!” I heard someone called. It was, Jenny.

“Let’s go have lunch!” she added.

“Sure. Let’s go!”

“It’s not obvious that you’re in a really good mood!”

“Yeah, well, let’s hurry up now!”

“Sure!”

We ran as fast as we can, until we reach the outside canteen (Lucky, no one’s here except us). I then, saw Ben, waiting for us near a table. He was waving to give us a sign, and then tapped the table beside him. Good! He got us a clean table. This’ll be perfect!

“Come on! Let’s go there.” I said, pointing at the table where Ben is.

She was silent for a while. It’s as if she saw some ghost.

“Are we going to eat… there?” she finally said.

“Yeah, isn’t it lucky for us that Ben got us a table? He’s such a nice guy huh?”

Stupid! Why did I say that? It’s as if lots of people are here. Oh no! Maybe she’ll say ‘there are tons of tables there! Why don’t he just go away and leave us!?’

“Ye-yeah…” it’s as if she doesn’t care at what I said.

There’s something odd in here. No, don’t get distracted with silly things! It’s nothing… Just go with the plan.

“Hey Ben!” I greeted him happily.

“Hey Guys!”

We sat beside him.

It was silent. Oh right! I forgot I have something to say… Ben said I have to leave them alone.

“Umm…” it seems awkward when I broke the silence.

They both looked at me.

“I forgot something in the classroom… so I’ll just-”

“NO! I’LL GET IT!” Jenny said desperately as she stood up from her seat.

“No, its okay, I’ll get it…” I ran out of the area.

Yes! I did it! I did our first plan! What a success! I so wanted to ask Ben how I did… but, there’s something really odd. Why did Jen want to do it? Why does she desperately want to get it? Does she want to be away from Ben? Is she afraid of being alone with Ben?

I know something’s up.
