chapter seventeen

Hmmmm.....

    The next morning, I wolk up and emediatly ran to the phone. I called Sophie (of course). The phone rang about four times, until the answering machine came on, and Sophie's fathers voice came on and told me to leave a message after the beep. "Um, sophie", I began, once I'd heard the beep, "You seemed pretty upset yesterday. So, I just wanted to talk to ya', to see whats on your mind. I guess I'll see ya at school then. Bye". I hung up the phone, and got ready for school.

 

    As soon as I got to school, I ran to Sophie's locker. But when I got there, She was'nt there. I figured she might be at our homeroom, since she hated being tardy. So I dropped my stuff off at my locker, and ran to homeroom (until a teacher yelled at me and told me to walk in the hallways). When I got there, I asked the teacher if I could use the phone (My mom can't afford to buy me a cell phone).I had to call Sophie because she obviously was'nt at school. I dialed the number, and waited as the phone rang. It rang about two times, then a familiar voice answered. "Hello?", it was Blake. I was so surprised, that I almost did'nt know what to say. "Um, hi Blake! It's Alex. Ya'know, Sophie's friend?" I said. "Oh, hi Alex! Um, Sophie can't talk right now. She has'nt gotten any sleep since she found out about the devorce, so mom's making her stay home today. Do you want me to give her a message?" he asked. "Yeah, sure", I began, " Ask her if we're still friends". Then, I hung up the phone.

 

    That afternoon, I was sitting at the table, doing homework while my mom was out buying groceries. I was still getting used to the fact that she was changing. It was wierd, but in a good way. So anyhow, after a while I decided to go out side and get some fresh air. So I walked down stairs to the lobby, and strolled out the door of the apartment building. There was an alley right next to the building, where people liked to go out to and smoke weed, or regular ciggarettes. So I decide to just take a walk around the ally to get some fresh air. When I reached the alley, I noticed a woman standing a few feet away from me, with her back turned to me. It was'nt until she turned around that I saw it was my mom. "Mom, what're you-" I stopped when I saw what was in her hand. She turned around and faced me; she looked surprised. In between her forefinger, and her middle finger, was a lighted cigarette.

We just stood there, for about a minute or two. "A-Alex, what are you doing here?" she asked. But I could hardly hear her. I was to angry to hear her.
