Chapter seventeen

Hmmm....

    The next morning, I emediatly ran to the phone and called Sophie. The phone rang four times, but then the ansering machine came on and her fathers voice came on and told me to leave a message after the beep. " Um Sophie", I began once I had heard the beeping sound, "I just wanted to talk to you, because you seemed pretty upset yesterday....So I guess I'll see you at school today". I hung up, and got ready for school.

 

     When I got there, I ran to Sophie's locker. But Sophie was'nt there. Then I figured she might already be at home room, since she hated being tardy. So I ran to our home room, but when I got there, she was no where to be seen. Then I asked the teacher if I could use the phone ( My mom can't afford to buy me a cell phone), and I used it to call Sophie's house. The phone rang about two times, but then a familiar voice answered. It was Blake. "Hello?", he said. I was almost too speachless to answer. "Hi Blake, it's Alex. Ya'know, Sophie's friend? Anyways, is she there?", I waited for a response, but I got none. "Blake? You still there?" I asked. "Yeah, I'm here. And yes, Sophie is home. She's sick, because she has'nt been getting any sleep." He said. "Oh....Well could you ask her something for me?" I asked. "Sure", I paused after he said that, because I did'nt really have anything to ask her. "Ask her if we're still friends", and I hung up the phone.

 

    That afternoon, I did my homework while mom was out buying groceries. I was still getting used to the fact that she was changing. It was wierd, but in a good way.

After a while, I decided to go out side and get some fresh air. I strolled down the stairs of the apartment building, and went right out the lobby door. I figured I'd go for a walk down the deserted alley next to the building. When I reached the alley, I saw my mom standing there with her back facing me. "Hey mom, what're you-", she suddenly spun around (Surprised I guess) and I saw she had something in her hand.

It was a cigarette. "A-Alex? What are you doing out here?" She asked, but I could hardly hear her.I was too angry to hear her.
